Il tema non è nuovo, e nemmeno recente, visto che una prima discussione risale a soltanto sei anni dopo l…a morte del filosofo - il De stella nova di Kepler è del 1606 - , e che esso è stato più volte affrontato sia nell'ambito degli studi bruniani che in quello delle ricerche sulla rivoluzione scientifica. Le varianti che Dario Tessicini propone nel suo studio risiedono specificamente negli ambiti di indagine che sono stati affrontati e si fondano su testi e contenuti diversi da quelli solitamente associati con la filosofia di Bruno: l'Autore studia l'argomento rimanendo il più possibile all'interno dei confini tematici, temporali e, quando opportuno, anche geografici del dibattito astronomico e cosmologico del quale Bruno fu partecipe sul finire del Cinquecento. In questo senso, i 'dintorni' nel titolo si riferiscono in primo luogo a una dimensione della ricerca ristretta agli ambienti più vicini al filosofo durante la concezione del suo pensiero. I risultati di questo criterio di lavoro emergono con particolare chiarezza nello studio di alcuni capitoli del De immenso, che sono stati messi a confronto con testi prodotti, pubblicati e/o discussi nei circoli intellettuali e nei luoghi conosciuti da Bruno durante il soggiorno tedesco (1586-1591). Sul piano dell'interpretazione filosofica, il titolo allude inoltre a quei temi che si dispongono intorno alla teoria dell'infinito fisico, pur non essendone parte integrante. La disposizione e il moto dei pianeti all'interno del nostro sistema solare, la questione affrontata nei primi due capitoli, e l'interpretazione dei fenomeni celesti temporanei apparsi nell'ultimo quarto del Cinquecento delimitano con una certa precisione, pur rimanendo argomenti di ampio respiro, un nucleo problematico concettualmente legato sia alla tematica dell'infinito - per esempio, attraverso le questioni della pluralità dei mondi e dell'estensione delle dimensioni dello spazio cosmico - , sia al dibattito in corso all'epoca di Bruno (basti pensare alla letteratura sulla nova del 1572 e alle comete, oggetto di indagine della seconda parte del volume). Per quanto riguarda il metodo di lavoro, Tessicini presta particolare attenzione al confronto tra i testi. Dove possibile, cerca di stabilire relazioni intertestuali, che in alcuni casi prendono la forma di vere e proprie citazioni da parte di Bruno. Anche qui si tratta, per certi versi, di 'dintorni', il cui significato non risiede tanto negli aspetti singoli e particolari della loro presenza nei testi di Bruno, quanto nell'essere, tutti insieme, un prezioso indicatore del modo in cui il filosofo è andato specificando e articolando le sue tesi sulla cosmologia e l'astronomia.
