Famous as a painter of ballet subjects, Degas was also a portraitist of great subtlety and distinction, a draftsman of infinite resource, and one of the most exciting sculptors of his time. Here in more than fifty pages of illustrations, including thirty in colour, is a comprehensive survey of the art of Degas: from his oils and pastels of the ballet, to his cafe and racetrack scenes, nudes, portraits and bronzes. With text and introductions by Daniel Catton Rich (the director of the art institute of Chicago) this is a fantastic book that will increase your knowledge and appreciation of the arts. First 4to, stiff wrappers, 80 pp, 52 illustrations (4 in color), bibliography. Published in an edition of 11,500 copies. A collaborative effort between the Art Institute of Chicago (Daniel Catton Rich was its Director of Fine Arts) and the Museum of Modern Art, this catalog was the first substantial monograph in English on the artist. Rousseau was first scorned, then loved, for his "naivete". Having spent the first part of his adulthood in the army and as a minor customs official (whence the nickname "Le Douanier"), he became a "professional painter" at the age of 40. Although he became celebrated in avant-garde circles, he sold few works during his lifetime. Freitag 8440. Very good in a soiled dj.
