Eugène Thirion (1813-1879), commerçant actif et esprit av…entureux, entreprend en 1846 la remontée de l'Orénoque. Si le prétexte de l'expédition est le commerce, celle-ci devient très vite un voyage d'exploration. L'auteur, apprécié pour ses talents musicaux, vit à la mode des habitants et décrit les coutumes des Indiens, leurs croyances, les bals, la cuisine, les cérémonies religieuses. avec un regard d'ethnographe. Il laisse également des descriptions géographiques tout à fait précises, au milieu des dangers quotidiens et des joies de la découverte. La bibliothèque de Versailles conserve dans ses réserves nombre de relations de voyages manuscrites. Ces sources sont inestimables pour la connaissance du monde à travers les siècles. Ce récit de navigation sur l'Orénoque a été donné en 2006 par les descendantes de son auteur.
