First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. This is a rare, first edition copy of "THE BARON'S YULE FEAST - A Christmas Rhyme" by Thomas Cooper, The Chartist. 1846 1st edition; Jeremiah How; London. Nicely bound in three-quarter leather with marbled covers, gilt lettering and decorations on the spine, and marbled page edges on all sides of the text block. Illustrated title page with a couple in-text drawings. Smaller in size - the book measures 6 3/4" tall x 4 1/4" wide. The book was likely influenced by the Victorian era's growing romanticization of Christmas, a cultural trend significantly shaped by Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" published a few years earlier in 1843. From a review: "The 'Baron's Yule Feast' is, the author states, ''a metrical essay, composed chiefly of imperfect and immature pieces,' some of them written 'many years ago' but which have no doubt been more or less touched in adapting them to the purposes of a poetical Christmas entertainment. The scene of the poem is laid in the baron's hall of Torksey, in Lincolnshire, which is revived with all the festivities of a Christmas of the olden time. Opportunity is here afforded for the introduction of various songs or narratives in the ballad style. Passing over these, there are a few lines, the concluding ones of the poem, that arrest the reader's attention, and which are calculated to awaken an echo in the breasts of but too many of the people of England." Condition: Some rubbing to the marbled paper over the boards; a small bit of the top paper layer has peeled away at the right edge of the front cover. Light rubbing to the leather along the edges of the spine. Bright gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only some occasional mild foxing (though a bit heavier on the front and rear end papers and pastedowns). Light shelf wear along the perimeter of the boards. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
