Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by Brian Rees (illustrator). Reprint. First published in 1954, this is a twelfth impression of 1961. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of Rees' fabulous retro jacket and spine, corners very slightly rubbed, not price clipped (10s 6d), previous owner's bookplate and inscription to ffep, very slight lean, internally clean and tight, overall a vg++ copy, in bright unsunned jacket reminiscent in style to John Craxton and John Minton, by Welsh artist Brian Rees (b.1930).101pp. Commissioned by the BBC, and described by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-53), as 'a play for voices' UNDER MILK WOOD takes the form of an emotive and hilarious account of a spring day in the fictional Welsh seaside village of Llareggub. We learn of the inhabitants' dreams and desires, their loves and regrets. The play introduces us to characters such as Captain Cat who dreams of his drowned former seafellows and Nogood Boyo who dreams of nothing at all. It is a unique and touching depiction of a village that has 'fallen head over bells in love'. The First Voice narration reveals the ordinary world of daily happenings and events, while the Second Voice conveys the intimate, innermost thoughts of the fascinating folk of Llareggub. There have been many productions of UNDER MILK WOOD over the years and Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, Elizabeth Taylor, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Tom Jones have all starred in radio, stage or film adaptations. Scarce with jacket.

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original brown cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a touch of rubbing to spine tips and corners. The cloth, with a small mark (c. 1 cm) to the upper edge of the front panel and a minor area of discolouration at the lower edge of the rear hinge is otherwise bright and fresh. Complete with the bright dustwrapper, a little rubbed to spine tips and the upper corner of the front panel. Light toning to the verso and inner flaps. Vertical dark mark (c. 3.5 cm) and a couple of light surface marks to the front panel. Not price-clipped (8s 6d net to the upper front flap). An attractive example. Under Milk Wood was commissioned for the BBC Third Programme and broadcast posthumously on 25 January 1954. Thomas' final work, an evocation of the lives and thoughts of the inhabitants of a fictional Welsh fishing town, very soon became his most famous, and one of the most loved (and adapted) works of post-war British literature. 6,400 copies of the first impression were issued on 5th March 1954. By the time of the seventh impression in May 1955, 53,700 copies had been printed. (Rolph B.21). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
