Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Thomas Ruff photographs Fabio Morabito text Barber & Osgerby case In Underground Inspector, writer Fabio Morabito gives his take on the relationship enjoyed by East and West Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall, with the distance and peculiar poetry that characterize his prose. He describes the daily life of an East Berlin underground inspector, a philandering husband forced by his profession and his incontinence to repeatedly walk across the Wall underground, since the subsoil knows no political frontier . After the fall of the Wall, the inspector vanishes, leaving nothing behind him save eight photographs that picture his mistresses homes. In order to build a perfectly smooth, airtight steel plank that mirrors the no-way-out constructions photographed by Thomas Ruff, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby borrowed a process from the automobile industry that enabled them to machine the aluminium with the precision of a micron. Thomas Ruff Thomas Ruff was born in 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach, Germany, one of six children. He has become a leading figure in contemporary art. His personal style of photography is characterized by a distancing from the subject, in particular in the series of portraits that became known internationally and in which he has photographed his family and friends, always taken in frontal view on eye level. His work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, among which the Chabot Museum in Amsterdam and the Zwirner & Wirth Gallery in New York. On the basis of his experience in producing the Portrait Series, Thomas Ruff returned to an idea that had already occured to him while working on the interiors : to shoot the exteriors of buildings. He selected unspectacular, ordinary buildings built between the 1950 s and 1970 s in and around Dusseldorf. To be able to shoot undisturbed, he worked in the early hours of the morning and mostly from January to March, a procedure that allowed him to take advantage of the neutral background of the fequently uniform grey skies at that hour and season in Central Europe. Fabio Morabito Poet, short story writer, essayist and translator, Fabio Morabito was born in 1955 in Alexandria (Egypt) to Italian parents. He lived in Milan until the age of 15 then emigrated to Mexico, where he started writing in Spanish. Considered one of the most original voices in contemporary Mexican literature, he is the author of several short story and poetry collections, including Lotes Baldios (which won the Carlos Pellicer prize in 1995), La vida Ordenada (2000) and Grieta de fatiga (date??), which were all received to critical acclaim. Barber & Osgerby Edward Barber (born in Shrewsbury in 1969) and Jay Osgerby (born in Oxford in 1969) have worked together since meeting as students at the Royal College of Art in 1992. One of their first collaborative projects was the Loop Table, a deceptively simple coffee table with a birch ply top looping around the base, which was produced first by Isokon Plus in the UK, then by Cappellini in Italy. Barber & Osgerby have developed collections for a large number of clients and manufacturers such as Flos, Magis, Cappellini, Coca-Cola, Levi s , Panasonic, Authentics, Pantone, Swarovski, Venini and Established & Sons, among others. They have also designed furniture for public interior spaces such as The De La Warr Pavilion, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the St. Thomas Cathedral in Portsmouth, England, and sculptural pieces for public spaces including Greenwich Park. Barber & Osgerby s designs can be found in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Original bright blue paper-covered boards with white lettering in original photo-illustrated dustjacket, black lettering on spine. Front free endpaper and inside cover of portfolio with small limitation labels "Thomas Ruff, Düsseldorf-based photographer and Concept artist, was born in 1958 and attended the Bechers' master class at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art. He embarked on a truly striking career as an artist. In "Nudes" he focuses on pornography, r rather on stills taken from pornographic scenes he has found on the Web, and then processes them electronically before blowing them up to immense proportions. Digitally colored, alienated by blurring contours and at time eliminating focus, the content dissolves into more or less abstract fields of color, forcefully unnerving our perception, our expectations and our erotic fantasies. A short story by Michel Houellebecq, Ruff's dream author for the occasion, unequivocally points up what the photographer's pictures are about, namely the act of solitary surfing through artificial worlds, the distance of purported intimacy, sex and love in the age of the Internet and of swinger clubs. In other words, the end of Romanticism." (Publisher).

Also included are the recent nudes taken from web sites and other images from the internet, paying particular attention to the artist`s most recent works and his relationship with the visual production of the digital era in general. Printed on Rag Photographique Paper by Grieger, Düsseldorf to archival museum standards and presented in a custom-made folio enclosure. The print is signed and numbered by Ruff on verso. Presented in a portfolio with text by Thomas Ruff and Martin Barnes, Senior curator, Photographs, V&A. Paper size 40 x 50cm; image size 30 x 38.3cm. New. The print and portfolio enclosure are in flawless condition. From the Victoria & Albert Museum exhibition statement: "Inspired by some of the earliest photographs of India and Burma (Myanmar), Ruff's series, "Tripe | Ruff," commissiond by the V&A, reimagines a set of 1850s architectural and topographical images by British Army Captain and photographer Linnaeus Tripe. Encompassing over twenty prints, "Tripe | Ruff" is the latest series in Ruff's 35-year investigation into the medium of photography. In preparation for the series, Ruff scoured the museum's collection of over 800,000 photographs. He was captivated by the haunting quality of Tripe's large-format paper negatives, revealing temples, palaces and monuments that in some cases no longer exist. Made over 160 years ago, when he was an official photographer for the East India Company, Tripe's work is widely regarded as one of the great achievements in early photography. Ruff was drawn to the scale, beauty and aesthetics of Tripe's negatives - specifically the way in which discolouration and damage to the paper mark the passage of time. He was also fascinated by Tripe's early 'retouching' processes, in particular his painting the reverse of negatives to add different effects, such as clouds and foliage." About the Edition: "To mark the opening of the V&A Photography Centre, the V&A has commissioned internationally renowned German photographer Thomas Ruff to create a new body of work. Known for taking a critical and conceptual approach to photography, Ruff's new series digitally reinterprets Linnaeus Tripe's 1850s paper negatives of India and Burma from the V&A's collection. Thomas Ruff is one of the most exciting names in fine art photography. He has been the subject of multiple solo exhibitions including a critically acclaimed show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 2017. His work is held in museum collections worldwide including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Tate." From Thomas Ruff: "Working with the V&A's historic photography collection adds a new dimension to my work. It's the first time I've ever worked with paper negatives. I was fascinated and astonished by the beauty of Tripe's negatives and how he created them. In the age of digital photographs, I find it really interesting to revisit these images. Throughout my career I have produced a lot of negatives, but I've never really looked at them, except as the master for printing. Yet, Tripe's negatives have a pictorial quality that is really incredible. Tripe | Ruff is about the history, the different processes, techniques and technology of photography, and how rich the photographic world really is. The series is about curiosity, discovering something new and beautiful, and wanting to share it with the world." From Martin Barnes, Senior Curator of Photographs at the V&A: "By digitally reinterpreting photographs made over 160 years ago in places such as Mysore, Rangoon (Yangon) and Trichinopoly (Tiruchirappalli), Ruff gives Tripe's evocative images a new context. He emphasises their hidden details, resurrecting them with spectacular new life. It is a kind of collaboration between artists that bridges the centuries.". Signed by Author.
