"Albertus Magnus (1193-1280) was the most learned scholar of his age, the 'Doctor Universalis' of the Middle Ages and the only one to whom the epithet 'The Great' was applied. Albertus was active in practically all departments of learning - theological, philosophical, scientific - and his influence in all these directions was immense. He combined elements of Aristotelianism, Neo-Platonism, Christian theology and Muslin and Jewish philosophy, which he formed into one great system; but his chief aim as a philosopher remained the reconciliation of Aristotelianism with Christian teaching. His system became one of the bases of scholasticism all over Europe. Thomas Aquinas attended his lectures. Since Albertus's system was essentially a compilation, his standing in philosophy and theology may be challenged by others: but he was the most important observer of nature that the Middle Ages had yet produced, the greatest naturalist since Pliny. He wrote in the form of paraphrases of Aristotle, into which he interpolated his personal observations of natural and scientific phenomena, and he had at least a conception of the importance of experimentalism." (Printing in the Mind of Man 17). Albertus Magnus was an one of the most influential scientific minds of the Middle Ages. He made significant contributions to logic, psychology, metaphysics, chemistry [discoverer of arsenic], meteorology, mineralogy, and zoology. (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Much of modern knowledge of Aristotle and the introduction of Aristotelian thought into Western Europe comes from Albert's work. Additionally, Albert comments on Arab thinkers, such as Avicenna (see De Anima, vol. 3 in this work) and Averroes.
