Hardback. Condition: Good. With its inclusive view of literacy, Creating Literacy Instruction for All Students emphasizes methods that have been validated by research and practice, while delivering the basics of all major aspects of reading and writing. The Sixth Edition of Creating Literacy Instruction for All Students continues to be one of the most comprehensive, practical texts on the market, and includes a new focus on higher-level literacy practices. Written by distinguished author Tom Gunning, Creating Literacy Instruction for All Students provides readers with step-by-step guidance for teaching reading and writing, including sample lessons for virtually every major literacy skill/strategy. Reflecting the author?s ongoing extensive hands-on work with schools coping with the demands of No Child Left Behind, the Sixth edition includes teaching tips and materials that are more practical, more realistic, more effective, and more extensive than ever. A Letter To Students, From the AuthorAvon, ConnecticutMarch 14, 2007 Dear Student: Although I receive royalties from the sales of Creating Literacy Instruction for All Students (Sixth Edition), my main reason for writing the text and continuously revising it is to improve the quality of literacy instruction for students in grades pre-k through grade 8. I believe that the best way to do that is to provide for pre-service and in-service teachers a text that explains effective ways to assess and instruct students. As times change and I acquire new knowledge and insights, I add to and revise the suggestions that I make. In preparation for the revision of this last edition, I worked three days a week for a year in an urban school as a hands-on consultant. I also visited a number of schools, talked with lots of teachers, and worked with groups of students in a variety of settings. These direct experiences were very enlightening. One of my chief discoveries was the power of a well-planned, carefully executed intervention program that includes screening and continuous monitoring of progress. I?ve described this plan in the latest edition of Creating Literacy Instruction. While implementing the intervention program, I also discovered better ways to teach phonics, especially clusters (blends) as in stop and stamp, which are troublesome for many novice readers. And I devised a way of leveling beginning reading materials based on the phonics elements needed to read them. Using this leveling systems makes it possible to identify children?s books that reinforce the phonic elements that novice readers have been taught. A second key discovery was the importance of fostering higher-level reading and responding skills. To meet the demands of No Child Left Behind, many schools are focusing on decoding skills and literal comprehension. Unfortunately, this has led to a neglect of vocabulary development and higher-level literacy skills, which are key elements in developing the kinds of skills needed in today?s society and which are assessed in the upper grades by today?s high-stakes tests. To emphasize the importance of higher-level literacy skills, a new feature entitled ?Building Higher-Level Literacy,? appears at the end of each chapter. Recognizing the reality of the requirements of No Child Left Behind and high-stakes tests, I have included suggestions for preparing students to cope with demanding tests. Using lookbacks, supporting responses, and other key comprehension and test-taking skills are featured. Also emphasized is the importance of going beyond teaching students how to respond to challenging texts in discussions to also teaching them how to respond in writing, since that is how they will be assessed. Quickwrites, Macro-Cloze, Story Impressions, Think-Pair-Share, and a number of other intriguing teaching techniques have been added to the latest edition of Creating Literacy Instruction for All Students. Throughout the text, changes, large and small, have been made that I believe will enhance your knowledge of literacy and your ability as a teacher to build the literacy of the students that you teach. While I realize that the purchase of the text might mean a financial sacrifice, it should help make you a better teacher of literacy and your students? better readers and writers. Although the text is costly, potential benefits are priceless. Sincerely, Thomas G. Gunning, Ed. D, AuthorCreating Literacy Instruction for All Students.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Why do you garden? For fun? Work? Food? The reasons to garden are as unique as the gardener. The Roots of My Obsession features thirty essays from the most vital voices in gardening, exploring the myriad motives and impulses that cause a person to become a gardener. For some, it's the quest to achieve a personal vision of ultimate beauty; for others, it's a mission to heal the earth, or to grow a perfect peach. The essays are as distinct as their authors, and yet each one is direct, engaging, and from the heart. For Doug Tallamy, a love of plants is rooted first in a love of animals: "animals with two legs (birds), four legs (box turtles, salamanders, and foxes), six legs (butterflies and beetles), eight legs (spiders), dozens of legs (centipedes), hundreds of legs (millipedes), and even animals with no legs (snakes and pollywogs)." For Rosalind Creasy, it's "not the plant itself; it's how you use it in the garden." And for Sydney Eddison, the reason has changed throughout the years. Now, she "gardens for the moment." As you read, you may find yourself nodding your head in agreement, or gasping in disbelief. What you're sure to encounter is some of the best writing about the gardener's soul ever to appear. For anyone who cherishes the miracle of bringing forth life from the soil, The Roots of My Obsession is essential inspiration. …

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. For centuries, Bible scholars have believed that the rise of Antichrist would require a revived world order-a global system in which nations dissolve their boundaries, cultures merge, and ideologies blend into a single, dominant sovereignty. At the head of this utopian façade will stand one man who initially appears noble and charismatic¿ yet Scripture warns he will become "a king of fierce countenance" (Daniel 8:23). With absolute authority, he will advance a One-World Government, a universal religion, and global economic control. Those who resist his New World Order will be silenced, imprisoned, or destroyed. Ultimately, this tyrant will exalt himself "above all that is called God¿ so that he, as God, sitteth in the temple of God" (2 Thessalonians 2:4). Bible prophecy portrays this coming figure as the most ruthless dictator in human history-one who will attempt a satanic Final Solution far beyond the horrors of Hitler's regime. And the events leading toward this era are unfolding faster than most people realize. In Antichrist and the Final Solution, you will discover: ¿ How the "Man of Sin" will soon emerge on the world stage ¿ The identity and role of the False Prophet who empowers him ¿ What will happen when Israel signs the prophesied peace treaty ¿ Why a Third Temple will be built and sacrifices resume ¿ How "life" will be given to the image of the Beast ¿ What unfolds during the seals, trumpets, and bowls of Revelation ¿ Why 144,000 Jews will be supernaturally sealed ¿ Why and how Nephilim giants will return as instruments of judgment ¿ The truth behind Mystery Babylon ¿ What really happens at Armageddon, the Second Coming, the Millennial Kingdom, the Great White Throne Judgment-and what all of this means for your destiny For the first time in decades, Dr. Thomas Horn and prophecy expert Terry James present a clear, comprehensive guide to dispensational end-times events-revealing what is happening now and what is coming very, very soon.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Thomas Lux is the author of such books as Sunday, Half Promised Land, and The Drowned River. His poetry has been fulfilling every expectation by penetrating deeper into the plain-spoken, saturnine, witty language that he virtually invented. In his latest work, Lux's level gaze, cool talk, weird rhythms, and quirky humor place him in a special territory - entirely original - of contemporary American poetry. These new poems, like Split Horizon itself, have unusual titles (Loudmouth Soup, Virgule, Each Startled Touch Returns the Touch Unstartled) and circle around their subjects in strange ways, most often dealing with the lonely oddity of the individual in a society that inflexibly ignores individuality.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Tom Berthel first met Hall of Fame football coach Hayden Fry when, in the mid-1980s, his investment firm, Berthel Fisher & Co., became a corporate sponsor of the University of Iowa Athletic Department. This business partnership not only helped Berthel Fisher establish a winning public image, but it also gave birth to one of the most important and enduring friendships of Tom Berthel?s life. Fry became a mentor and father figure to Berthel, and the wisdom Fry bestowed on him through their mutual friendship taught Berthel invaluable lessons in leadership, motivation, and what it takes to be a winner in business and in life. These are the lessons that form the core of Beyond Xs and Os. In the book, Tom Berthel recounts the many lessons he learned from Coach Frysome but not all related to footballand explains how they helped shape his life and business. In each chapter, Berthel outlines a specific lesson he learned from Coach Fry, explains how he integrated these philosophies into his business and personal life, and offers advice to help readers apply them to their own lives and businesses. Each chapter also features a special "Postgame with Coach Fry? sidebar written by the venerable Coach Fry himself, in which he reflects on the events and lessons depicted in the chapter and offers a deeper perspective on each, enriching the lesson.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sportsbooks about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team.Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. Paperback. Condition: Good. Marshalling the vast powers of narrative and historical re-creation that he brought to his international bestseller Schindler's List, Thomas Keneally has created a moving and provocative novel about a headstrong young Catholic priest in World War II Australia. As Sydney braces itself for a Japanese invasion, Father Frank Darragh finds his pastoral duties becoming increasingly challenging. How should he counsel an AWOL black American soldier who may face death for his involvement with a white woman? And what should he say to another woman--the distressingly beguiling Kate Heggarty--who impresses him with her virtue even as she edges toward sin? When Kate is found murdered, Darragh falls under suspicion. And even if the police clear him, his superiors--and his own conscience--may not. Office of Innocence is a book that's impossible to put down, dense with moral complexity and alive with period detail.…
