Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - During the height of 19th-century European imperialism, colonizers in Africa faced a massive logistical nightmare: their imported horses and draft animals were being rapidly decimated by the tsetse fly. In a spectacular display of Victorian arrogance, they decided the solution was simple-they would simply domesticate the native zebra. What followed was a decades-long, spectacularly disastrous attempt to bend an untamable species to the human will. Unlike horses, which evolved a herd hierarchy that humans could hijack, zebras evolved alongside apex predators like lions. They are notoriously unpredictable, aggressively territorial, and possess a ducking reflex that makes them virtually impossible to lasso. This book uncovers the forgotten history of zebra domestication programs, detailing the eccentric aristocrats and stubborn military men who bankrupted themselves trying to ride these striped equines into battle. We explore the deep evolutionary biology that makes some species compliant and others eternally wild.Through this bizarre historical footnote, you will witness the ultimate collision between colonial hubris and the uncompromising laws of nature. It is a fascinating lesson in why humanity cannot simply engineer its way out of ecological boundaries.

Seller: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Autograph Letter, Signed. Octavo. 3pp. Donaldsonville, Louisiana: March 30, 1863. Folded in the original mailing envelope with two New Orleans postmarks, small "Held for Postage" ink stamp, and one three cent Washington stamp (Scott #65). The letter is near fine in very good envelope with postal wear. A letter by a soldier in the 25th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, Company B, in which he describes his unit's activities while on the move from Port Hudson, Louisiana, to Brashear City at Berwick Bay in preparation for General Nathaniel Bank's Overland Expedition into Texas later that fall. Written to his mother, Edwin Thorne describes his regiment's activity after it skirmished with Confederate forces on the bank of Mississippi River at Port Hudson. The letter reads in part: " we left Baton Rouge Friday March 28th about sun down on board the Transport St Mary and started down the river and arrived at this place about 9 o'clock the same night. It rained most of the night and we had to tough it out on the ground but we got our tents up the next day it has been very cold indeed and most likely in a day or two it will be hot enough to roast a person Donaldsonville is about 40 miles from Baton Rouge and is on the opposite side, it is a small place and is divided in the middle by a [Bayou?] which runs into the river. There is also a small fort with mounts about 20 guns [and] there is about 10 thousand troops here and 3 or 4 Batteries and more coming. We expect to leave here tonight or tomorrow bound for Texas as far as I can learn. We are now to march to Liberdor that is south east from here about 30 miles and from there we are to go to Frazor [Brashear] City or Berbick [Berwick] Bay . . . There is a Railroad [New Orleans Opelousas & Great Western Railroad] from Liberdor to Berbick Bay and we may have a chance to ride part of the way, any way we shall have plenty of marching to do and I think plenty of Rebels " As noted in Colonel George P. Bissell's *Brief History of the Twenty-fifth Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers*: from Donalsonville the 25th fought its way through several more skirmishes until loading into boats that sailed through Atchafalaya bayou to Irish Bend, where it drove "the enemy before us through the entire valley of the Tech from its mouth to its source Four engagements and 300 miles march in twenty days". An informative, first-hand account of this less well-known, important campaign that paved the way for the Texas Overland Expedition of 1863.
