Book First Edition
Printed wrappers, paper cover label, 8vo, 98 pp, ills (many colour). 75 + 85 items. The very appealing and well-illustrated catalogue of an exhibition held at Henry Sotheran Ltd., London, 30 December 1994 - 28 January 1995 ; The Ruskin Gallery, Sheffield, 17 February - 18 March 1995 ; and George Bayntun, Bath, 3 - 29 April 1995. In 1894 James and Mary Lee Tregaskis organised an International Bookbinding Exhibition consisting of 73 copies of the little Kelmscott Press book, The Tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane, by different binders from twenty-seven countries around the world, held at their London bookshop, the Caxton Head. That catalogue is reproduced in facsimile here, on pp.11-30, followed by colour photographs of each of the bindings. It was one of the most popular bookbinding exhibitions ever, with press reports in over seventy publications, and when it was shown again in 1994 it attracted a great deal of attention. To mark the centenary a new exhibition was prepared for which 85 copies of Andrew Marvell's The Garden and Other Poems were bound by binders from all over the world and exhibited in London, Sheffield, and Bath - again the catalogue is reproduced with colour photographs of all the bindings. Contents: The Tregaskis International Bookbinding Exhibition 1894, an Introductory Essay by Marianne Tidcombe; a Facsimile of the 1894 Exhibition Catalogue; Photographs of the Bindings; A century of Fine Bookbinding, by Bernard C. Middleton; The Tregaskis Centenary Exhibition 1994, An Introductory Essay byMarianne Tidcombe; The Catalogue and Photographs of Bindings. Minor mark to rear wrapper, otherwise Very Good.
