Created by a royal decree dated the 25th of February 1595, their first custodian was the famous Portuguese chronicler Diogo do Couto. As Goa was the seat of the viceroys who guided the destinies of the widely-scattered Portuguese possessions in the east, it was natural that the archives there should come to house one of the most precious collections of documents pertaining to these possessions. For any historian with an interest in the period of Portuguese rule in Ceylon these archives are therefore invaluable.
