Munsell, 1876. 1st ed. 176pp. Portrait frontis. Bound in modern 1/4 leather and marbled boards, morocco spine label. First few leaves, including frontis, have been mended. Overall good. HOWES T-266. An important biography of Tench Tilghman (1744-1786), who served as General Washington's aide-de-camp during the American Revolution, along with the first publication of a number of Tilghman papers. Howes states that not all copies contain the frontis. Quite uncommon to find this work in this original state. Of the thirty-two officers who assisted George Washington as aides-de-camp during the course of the War for American Independence, Tench Tilghman proved to be the Commander-in-Chief's most loyal aide, serving with him from August 1776 to November 1783. After working closely with General Washington for only a few months in 1776, Tilghman would prophetically observe, ".indeed the Weight of the whole War may justly be said to lay upon his Shoulders." -Samuel K.
