No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Red cloth; spine strongly sun faded with gilt lettering difficult to discern. Author's ink signature "John S Tilley." on front free endpaper. Frequent pencil underlining and margin marks occur within Chapter One (pages 1-13); no other markings readily apparent upon a cursory perusal. Binding is firm. There is also the ownership inscription of John Henry Pinson of Geiger, Alabama, who served in the Alabama House of Representatives and wrote on Jefferson Davis. He records getting the book from Walter Burgwyn Jones, the prominent segregationist Alabama judge, who received one electoral vote in the 1956 Presidential Election from a 'faithless elector'. There is a brief note from Jones laid in. First edition UNC Chapel Hill 1941. Jacket in Good condition with average wear, tear and fading. Book in Very Good condition with light wear, foxing to textblock edges and occasionally within. Inside the front cover are some traces of tape-staining where the note from Jones seems to have formerly been taped.
