Publisher's quarter vellum with elaborate gilt titles and decoration to spine, and grey paper-covered boards titled to upper. Quarter Vellum over Boards. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. A futuristic journey that was from its very conception sweetly moored in the misty past! 4to. 31 by 24 cm. 48 pp and 48 tipped-in (or mounted) color plates. The singular story and its illustrations are truly sui generis; the fabulous concoction of fantasy rendered here draws equally from both the text and illustrations. Condition: Short closed tear, upper spine extremity. Touches of soiling on vellum spine, but the vellum overall is bright and comes off as clean. Neatly written short ink gift inscription dated 1928 on FFEP. Within green leaves, upon which text and plates are mounted, has age toning around edges, manifest in light browning. DJ with a few chips, the largest being the rear upper edge, yet the most conspicuous being by the upper spine extremity. Also chipped by lower extremity. All chips have jagged, or irregular edges. Rear with a few crinkle lines and one dime-sized stain. The DJ now protected from further decay by mylar and white backing. We rate the DJ merely Good because of these chips, but if considering only the front cover, it would come out better.

With 48 colour illustration plates and calligraphic text both mounted on dark grey card throughout. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the spine a little darkened and the paper cracked and frayed to a few spots on the board corners and edges. The contents, with offsetting to the endpaper and some toning and occasional chipping to the page edges (not effecting the illustration or text plates), are otherwise bright and clean throughout and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. William M. Timlin (1892 1943) was born in Northumberland but spent most of his life in South Africa. Timlin was a highly skilled writer and illustrator and also earned a living as an architect, and his aptitude in that field are clear to see in the beautiful, detailed, fantasy buildings that are abound in this title. The Ship that Sailed to Mars is a wonderfully whimsical blend of science fiction and fantasy, the profusely illustrated interstellar adventure taking the reader to planets full of pirates, fairies, and dragons. Upon receiving the hand lettered manuscript, George Harrap liked it so much that they decided to publish it as it was instead of using typed text. Condition: Very good. First Edition. First edition of this gorgeous outlier of the Golden Age of Illustration, a fully realized fantasy of interplanetary travel written and illustrated by South African architect William Timlin. An Old Man fulfills the dream of his youth, "sailing by way of the Moon, and the more friendly planets" on his way to the Shining City of Mars. The ship of the title, designed by the aged engineer but built by fairies, captures the tale's balance of science fiction and fantasy: one iconic plate depicts the ship, whose design hearkens back to the Age of Discovery, outrunning the magnificent flare of a meteor. The only work authored by Timlin, THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS secured his reputation alongside prolific professional illustrators like Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, and Kay Nielsen. A beautiful copy of a strikingly original space odyssey. Quarto. 12'' x 9''. Original quarter vellum, grey printed paper boards, spine lettered and ornamented in gilt. 96 leaves of heavy grey paper, containing 48 mounted pages of printed lettering in Timlin's hand and 48 mounted full color illustrations. Early New York bookseller ticket on rear pastedown. Spine slightly darkened, some tip and edge wear, faint rubbing to boards. Interior clean.
