Octavo, black boards (hardcover), gilt letters, xviii, 254 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. Joan of Arc is a famous historical figure and there have been many biographies about the French peasant girl who became a soldier and led her countrymen against the occupying English. Timothy Wilson-Smith's new book takes a new and unique angle on Joan, not merely giving an account of a life cut short but focusing also on her long history which, at her death in 1431, had just begun. In her lifetime Joan was supported by theologians like Jean Gerson and the poet Christine de Pisan. Barely a generation after her death for heresy France was free of English occupation outside Calais, Joan's trial was re-examined and she was vindicated. Yet, for centuries after her rehabilitation, Joan of Arc was largely forgotten. Although mythologised by writers such as Shakespeare, Voltaire and Schiller, it was not until the publication of her trial documents in the nineteenth century that authors such as Mark Twain and George Bernard Shaw could attempt to writer of her as she was. She became widely venerated in both France and Britain, and sculptors and painters made her a popular icon. As a national heroine she inspired the fight against Germany in the First World War, excused anti-English feeling in Vichy France and encouraged the Free French. Today she is an emblem for Le Pen's National Front and her appeal extends far beyond France. Timothy Wilson-Smith sets the events of Joan's story in the context of Anglo-French and religious history. He brings out the contradictions in her reputation: the patriot, admired by those who no longer believe in consecrated kings; the saint, revered in an increasingly secular country, Joan of Arc: Maid, Myth and History provides an engaging insight into both the life and afterlife of this most enigmatic of medieval women. European History, France, French History, Women's History, Medieval Europe, Women's Biography, French Biography, Church HIstory. bslic.

Softcover. Condition: Fine. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (illustrator). Reprint edition. Softcover. Reprint, 1999 (of the 1998 edition) Softcover. 90 illustrations, 59 in color. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) was a boldly original artist who led a short and violent life. His sexually provocative nude figures and his dramatic religious paintings have a psychological power and an undiminished capacity to shock and disturb after almost four centuries. Timothy Wilson-Smith provides a lively and readable biography of an artist who has become an iconic figure in the late twentieth century, and presents a memorable selection of his works, from his early genre pictures to the dark and intense religious paintings of his years in exile.".
