Encuadernación de tapa blanda. Condition: Nuevo.

"Tacitus depicts Petronius, the arbiter of elegance, as a man of sophisticated and luxurious tastes, lazy and inert in his ordinary life but capable of energy in public affairs. He incurred the jealousy of Tigellinus, the joint commander of the praetorian guard, who falsely denounced him as the friend of a conspirator, so that Petronius, on receiving an ominous command from the palace not to move from the house in which he was staying at Cumae, was compelled to take his own life. He dies with easy panache, after first writing out a full list of Nero's sexual irregularities, with the names attached, and making sure that the document was duly sent to the emperor under seal." Woodcut chapter head and initial on p. 2. Printed marginalia throughout. Later French calf, edges speckled in red; (some marginal worming or light dampstains; some light outerwear, otherwise good; front board strengthened. This is the second volume of the French translation of the "History of Rome" or Decades of Livy by Jean de Amelin (or Hamelin) and printed by Jacques du Puys in 1582; this "troisiesme" part (third decade) contains the first books for the Second Punic War, also known as the War against Hannibal. Jean de Amelin was a celebrated marshal andserved in the army of Henry II of France. He is known as the earliest translator into French of Livy, publishing his first complete version of the third Decade in Paris in 1559, with the "Arguments" of Florus, and notes and annotations. Jean de Amelin's translation of the Decades was deemed useful in its time for its ample printed marginalia that supplied the modern names of villages, rivers, and provinces in France. In 1580, Blaise de Vigenère (1523-1596), a competing French translator and cryptographer, published his corrections to the already existing Jean de Amelin translations, followed by his personal translation of the last four books of the decade. These editions of the Livy Decades, enriched with Blaise de Vigenère's annotations, comprise the Parisian issues by Jacques du Puys appearing between 1580 and 1584 therein the title pages are marked with his script monogram"B.D.V." to acknowledge his responsibility for the work. Although Blaise de Vigenère prevailed as the preeminent sixteenth-century commentator and scholar of Livy, his work originated in that of Jean de Amelin; the latter not yet eclipsed in the title. This edition isnot common; OCLC locates copies at the Univ. of Pennsylvania and the Univ. of Illinois.
