Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. viii, 223 pages; Textblock clean and secure in later red buckram binding with new endpapers and gilt lettering at spine; LC release stamp on ffep. Not found in OCLC. Author F. Todleben, Ordinator am St. Marien-Magdalena-Hospital und Arzt an der St. Petersburger Mineralwasser - Anstalt im Alexander-Park. The treatment of diseases with mineral spring water belongs to the oldest medical therapies. The present pharmacy historical work examines the impact of the use of mineral waters, as well as of their dried components, as therapeutic agents in the 19th and early 20th centuries, i.e. from approx. 1810 to 1930, as well as the contributions given by pharmacists in the development and analysis of mineral water springs. Around 1800 interest in the bathing culture grew. Further attempts to analyse the mineral water were made, aiming at improving its use in medicine, and at preparing mixtures of water identical to those mineral waters famous for their curative properties. Doctors were convinced that for each disease Mother Nature possessed an appropriate medicinal spring, which could be discovered through chemical analysis of the waters. What the American temperance campaigner Diocletian Lewis (1823-1886) called the 'mineral water mania' of the mid-nineteenth century took a scientific turn in the Russian Empire at around the same time as it did in Western Europe and the United States. In the 1860s the universities of Moscow and St. Petersburg examined a rash of medical dissertations on such topics as 'The Effect on Blood Pressure of Baths and Showers at Different Temperatures', describing in awed detail the results of douching experiments on rabbits and large dogs and the language of the burgeoning hydropathic establishment trickled quickly into the promotional material of Russia's self-proclaimed 'watering places'.
