A Rural Life, by Ken Tolmie; Published in Canada by Oberon Press; Photographs by Castle-Beveridge Photographic Service, Halifax Nova Scotia; 1986. Ken Tolmie graduated from Mount Allison University, Canada, with a BFA in 1962. After early experiments with surrealism, conducted while he was travelling and living in England and Spain in the mid 1960s, he returned to Canada and began to develop a realist style. He lived in Ottawa for about 10 years. He moved to the Nova Scotia village of Bridgetown and chronicled its small-town life in paintings: local people, farms, domestic scenes, animals. The Bridgetown Series participated in a documentary trend in Canadian art of the 70s and 80s dedicated to memorializing regional consciousness. Many works in this series are featured in A Rural Life, this book, and the series was featured on CBC and TVO several times throughout the 80s. This book contains more than 50 of his Bridgetown Series in beautiful colour. This book, 60 pages, is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket that is in a protective mylar wrap. A wonderful depiction of life in the Annapolis Valley rural Nova Scotia's agricultural gem. …
