First Edition
Early American printing. [6], 343, [1], [2] pages. Hardcover: H 19.75cm x L 13.25cm. No dust jacket. Brown cloth mildly soiled; shallow chip to front board's top fore-edge corner with small surface loss to cloth at upper fore-edge; light bumping/scuffing to spine ends; gilt stamping to spine and front board remains fairly bright. Foxing/toning to text block edges. Green floral decorated endpapers; past owner's ink signature on ffep verso; a few scattered spots of minor foxing and soiling but interior leaves overall remain clean. Binding is firm. Features six stories: "The Invaders;" "The Wood-Cutting Expedition;" "An Old Acquaintance;" "Lost on the Steppe; or, The Snowstorm;" "Polikushka;" "Kholstomir: A Story of a Horse." The title page imprint and Crowell's rear advertising leaf both cite the firm's address at 13 Astor Place which was their location between 1881-1893 (this according to researcher Sid Huttner's online Lucile Project which tracks the innumerable editions of Owen Meredith's classic novel). It is likely impossible to definitively ascertain Crowell's correct first printing of THE INVADERS but at least this copy is theoretically limited to 1887-1893.
