Condition: New.
Paperback. Condition: New. An adventure in scientific discovery Pluto, the farthermost planet in the solar system, some 3,673 million mites from the Sun, was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in 1930. The fiftieth anniversary of Pluto's discovery will be celebrated in 1980 and OUT OF THE DARKNESS: THE PLANET PLUTO tells the exciting scientific story of the twenty-five year search for a planet X beyond Neptune, and its discovery-the only planet found in the twentieth century. The planets Mercury, Venus. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were all known since antiquity. Then Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781, and 65 years later, in 1846, Johann Calle and Urbain le Verner discovered Neptune. Variations in orbital perturbations of the planets and theoretical astronomy were responsible for predicting and discovering the three outermost planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) and so Pluto's story is also, to some extent, the story of its planetary neighbors. What kind of world is Pluto? Much is still a mystery (its.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 2 leaves. Very Good. Two photocopies of (1) pp. 126/127 and (2) 128/129 from the book by Tombaugh and Patrick Moore, "Out of Darkness. The Planet Pluto" (1980). Tombaugh signed and dated his name in the blank margin at the bottom of p. 126. He wrote Notes in the top margins of pp. 126 and 127, with arrows in the side margins. He also wrote Notes on pp. 128 and 129, with arrows in the side margins. Since in January 2025 there are on the market at least four other photocopies signed by Tombaugh involving pp. 126-127 or pp. 128-129 (priced from $115-$375), it is certainly possible he did this many other times. But in addition to these signed photocopies, there are currently on the market many signed Tombaugh items relating to his discovery of Pluto. He was a prolific signer. There is an irony here because Pluto is no longer the ninth planet of our solar system. In 2006 Pluto was designated a "dwarf planet". Pluto is a real object in space, so Tombaugh did discover something real. But Pluto no longer being a planet in our solar system, what will the importance, and name recognition, of Tombaugh's discovery be in the distant future? --As of January 2025, my listing is the only offer of photocopies of all four pages and is the lowest price by a lot.
