Era un cenacolo di filosofi, letterati e artisti e voleva significare la riapertura dell'antica accademia ateniese…di Platone. Fra gli esponenti principali dell'accademia neoplatonica oltre alla stesso Ficino ci furono Pico della Mirandola, Poliziano, Nicola Cusano, Leon Battista Alberti, Cristoforo Landino,nonché i più importanti esponenti della famiglia de Medici, quali Giuliano de Medici, e Lorenzo il Magnifico. A questa scuola parteciparono anche gli intellettuali bizantini dopo la presa di Costantinopoli del 1453, arruolati come insegnanti, la cui presenza permise l'uso diretto dei testi di Platone, pressoché sconosciuti nel Medioevo che vennero tradotti in latino. Il rinnovato interesse per i classici, e per Platone in particolar modo, caratterizza la scuola neoplatonica e ne indirizza l'interesse per la pedagogia che mira a formare i giovani nella sua completezza mediante lo sviluppo armonico di tutte le doti umane, sia fisiche che spirituali, facendo di ciascun individuo un essere unico come un'opera d'arte. L'amore, la libertà, la ricerca dell'infinito vengono esaltati come valori. L'amore soprattutto veniva inteso platonicamente come una via per elevarsi alla perfezione e alla contemplazione di Dio. Per quanto riguarda la religiosità secondo Cusano, l'individuo umano pur essendo una piccola parte del mondo è una totalità nel quale tutto l'Universo risulta contratto. L'uomo è infatti immagine di Dio, e come nell'unità numerica sono potenzialmente impliciti tutti i numeri, così l'uomo esplicita dentro di se l'UNIVERSO. Dopo la morte de Il Magnifico nel 1492, l'Accademia Neoplatonica si riunì alla Villa di Bernardo Rucellai, presso gli Orti Oricellari in Via Rucellai Appartennero a questa seconda generazione Niccolò Machiavelli, Iacopo da Diacceto e Luigi Alamanni. E' in questo contesto che la figura dell'uomo assume un senso di responsabilità all'interno della Storia, opponendo la volontà e la responsabilità umana al dominio del caso e all'incognite della storia. L'accademia neoplatonica fu sciolta nel 1523, in conseguenza della congiura ordita contro il Cardinale Giulio de Medici, da parte di alcuni suoi membri. Libro.
