Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Foreword by Mel Harder and Tommy Henrich. This is the story about an old autographed baseball that changes the authors perception of life. The ball is now on exhibit in the Babe Ruth Museum. There is a letter SIGNED by de la Torre to the Akron Becon Journal, e…nclosed, detailing the story of the book and is a review copy given to that newspaper. The author self-published the book in a limited edition. In the rear of the book are illustrated baseball cards of the 1934 All-Star team including Earl Averill, Tommy Bridegs, Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Heinie Manush, Pinky Higgins, Ban Chapman, Red Ruffing, Jack Russell, Lefty Gomez, Charlie Gehrignger, Sammy West, Tommy Henrich, Jimmy Dykes and many others. All of the cards are still intact, none have been cut out. Non price clipped, both the Dust Jacket and the book are fine condition. I have around 185 signed baseball titles more than 260 books on the history of baseball in stock. Discounts are available on multiple purchases on the same order. Signed by Author(s).

hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton…mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. An exploration of the science and cultural significance of carnivorous plants, now in paperback. Carnivorous plants are a unique botanical group, possessing modified leaves to trap, kill, and consume small creatures. As a result, they are often depicted as killers in films and literature - f…rom Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors to the world-dominating plants of The Day of the Triffids - yet many people regard carnivorous plants as exotic and beautiful specimens to collect and display. In this abundantly illustrated and highly entertaining book, Dan Torre describes the evolution, structure, and scientific background of carnivorous plants. Examining their cultural and social history, he also shows how they have inspired our imagination and been represented in art, literature, cinema, animation, and popular culture. From the Venus flytrap - a species endemic to the Carolinas - to pitcher plants, this fascinating history of these singular, arresting, beautiful, yet deadly plants is certain to be devoured. 'Dan Torre takes you from Ed Wood to Pokemon, from surrealistic art to synergistic relationships between bats and plants, all without missing a beat. This is one of those books that takes an already fascinating topic - animal-eating plants - and makes it even more exciting, more weird and endlessly fascinating.' - Tim Entwhistle, Director and Chief Executive, Royal Botanic Gardens, Victoria, Australia'We're not inclined to think of plants deriving nourishment from 'meat' and yet there are currently more than 700 recognised species of carnivorous plants. This book features exquisite images of many of them, along with the author's entertaining and comprehensive information on their evolution, structure, scientific background, and social and cultural history.'- Gardening Australia Carnivorous plants are a unique group, possessing modified leaves to trap, kill and consume small creatures. As a result they are often depicted as killers in films and literature, yet others regard them as exotic and beautiful specimens to collect and display. Hardback. Condition: New. In this book, Dan Torre explores the intriguing and multifaceted natural, cultural and social history of the orchid. Orchids are one of the largest families of plants - approximately 8 per cent of all the Earth's flowering species. They are known for their beautiful flowers with bright colours, delicate… forms and delicate fragrances. However, when we look deeper into their world, we find that they are much more than an elegant flowering plant and behave in unexpected ways that no other flowers do.Philosophers have contemplated them; countless artists have celebrated them; millions of people have cultivated them, displayed them and even consumed them. Orchids occupy our thoughts, our stories, our societies, our greenhouses, our florists, our supermarkets and our homes. And that is merely the beginning.
