L'eruzione del 1794 aveva dato al Filomarino l'occasione di verificare la vali…dità dei suoi studi e di alcuni strumenti realizzati nel suo gabinetto. Le sue osservazioni furono pubblicate in queste due lettere sull'eruzione del Vesuvio del 15 giugno 1794, sollevando molto interesse. Le Lettere furono ripubblicate l'anno successivo a Firenze e sempre nel 1795 tradotte in tedesco e pubblicate da un editore di Dresda. Filomarino fu una brillante figura di intellettuale nel clima dell'illuminismo meridionale. Scontò tragicamente il suo impegno civile e politico il 19 Gennaio 1799, quando fu bruciato vivo insieme al fratello dai lazzari in tumulto all'annuncio dell'ingresso dei francesi a Napoli.
