Condition: Good. 0. Cm. 14, pp. (8) 546 (30). Bella vignetta xilografica al frontespizio. Legatura del tempo in piena pergamena rigida con titoli in oro al dorso; tagli spruzzati. Minime tracce d'uso alla legatura, peraltro eseplare genuino e ben conservato. Raffaele Della Torre (o De Turri, 1579-1667), giurista e pensatore politico genovese di primissimo piano, fu autore di opere relative alla politica genovese, veneziana e napoletana, ma soprattutto di un vasto repertorio di riflessioni e dissertazioni dedicate al cambio. Questo interessante saggio di Della Torre è dedicato al celebre Squitinio della repubblica di Venezia, stampato nel 1612 e attribuito nel tempo ad Albizzi, Gualdo, De la Cueva, Scioppio o Pinelli Relativamente agli aspetti contenutistici così riporta lo stesso Piantanida: âFamoso libello satirico contro la repubbl. veneta mediante il quale l'anonimo A. intese dimostrare che la libertà originaria della repubblica vantata dagli scrittori veneziani non sussisteva, ma che invece Venezia è un antico dominio dell'impero romano e che di conseguenza l'imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero conserva sulla repubblica i suoi diritti e le sue pretese. Per la sua brevità , la scelta erudizione, la molta pratica di storia e di giurisprudenza, i fatti e gli spunti di critica esposti con novità , l'opuscolo ebbe enorme diffusione e molte ristampe. Paolo Sarpi ne prese lo spunto per la storia del Concilio di Trento e, ritenendo che lo Squitinio partisse dalla corte di Roma e non potendo rispondere direttamente, scrisse appunto la sua storia per mortificare quella Corte. Intanto il Senato veneto giudicò la satira come uno scritto contrario alla sicurezza dello stato e lo condannò al sequestro e ne fece bruciare tutte le copie in circolazioneâ. Rara prima edizione. Ne è autore il giurista e storico Raffaele Della Torre (Genova, 1579-1666), personaggio pubblico genovese schierato su posizioni indipendentiste filofrancesi ed antisavoiarde e antispagnole. "Tutti gli aspetti della problematica dei cambi e delle lettere di cambio vi sono affrontati, con un notevole ricorso alla dottrina precedente, sia giuridica sia teologica, con una particolare attenzione anche alla pratica dei tribunali: dopo la terza parte, infatti, vengono ripubblicate e commentate numerose sentenze della Rota romana (concludono l'opera i "Capitoli e ordini delle fere di Bisenzone", naturale richiamo alla supremazia genovese sul mercato, finanziario)" (Rodolfo Savelli in "Dizionario biografico Treccani"). Stupendo frontespizio allegorico inciso da Cornelis Bloemaert con ritratto dell'Autore e figure allegoriche magistralmente inc. in rame da C. Bloemaert. Prima edizione di quest'opera che procurò larga fama al noto giureconsulto genovese del XVI secolo. Essa si divide in tre ''disputationes'' (a loro volta suddivise in quaestiones) nelle quali si tratta del contratto di cambio come documento probatorio di esso, del cambio con ricorsa. L'autore tratta la problematica dei cambi e delle lettere di cambio, con un notevole ricorso alla dottrina precedente, sia giuridica sia teologica, con una particolare attenzione anche alla pratica dei tribunali. A supporto molti esempi pratici, richiamando le consuetudini dei mercanti, gli statuti delle fiere, i ''Capitoli et Ordini delle fere di Besenzone; che si fanno al presente nella città di Piacenza'' (publicati nelle 16 pp. di appendice), ed in particolare molte decisioni della Rota Romana emanate tra il 1542 ed il 1633. Volume piuttosto raro scritto in risposta al celebre pamphlet antiveneziano pubblicato anonimo, teso a sostenere la illegittimità del governo della Serenissima. Raffaele Della Torre studiò a Roma, a Bologna e infine a Parma, dove rimase fino al 1606, quando tornò a Genova e poco dopo ottenne il primo incarico pubblico, dando inizio a una lunga ed importante carriera. Nel 1624 fu sorteggiato governatore, trovandosi così a svolgere un ruolo importante durante il respinto attacco di Carlo Emanuele I di Savoia a Genova nel 1625. Nel 1628 alla scoperta della congiura di Giulio Cesare Vachero fu nominato consultore dei governatori che dovevano seguire il processo. Nel 1630 fu inviato a Casale per assicurare al governatore di Milano, don Ambrogio Spinola, che la presenza di un residente francese a Genova non era di per sé pregiudizievole ai rapporti con la Spagna; in realtà si stava verificando una svolta nella politica internazionale della Repubblica e il Della Torre si caratterizzò subito come un esponente di spicco del gruppo autonomista e filofrancese. Nel 1633 fu sorteggiato procuratore e nel 1634 partecipò alle trattative per la pace con i Savoia.Nel 1645 fu a Roma. Pubblicò nel 1651 il Dissidentis, desciscentis receptaeque Neapolis libri VI, commissionatogli dal Conte d'Ognate,[2] una ricostruzione della rivolta napoletana di Masaniello del 1647, e nel 1653 lo Squitinio della Republica di Venetia d'autore incognito squitinato. Nel 1654 le ripetute confische di imbarcazioni finalesi spinsero la Spagna a confiscare per rappresaglia i beni genovesi in Spagna, nel ducato di Milano e nel Regno di Napoli. Contribuì allora a indirizzare la diplomazia genovese nella difesa delle tesi della Cyrologia, attaccate da un libretto milanese anonimo (Gli affari del Finale con Genova.). L'anno successivo, dopo che era stato raggiunto un accordo diplomatico, diffuse il proprio punto di vista nell'opera Al curioso del vero. Anche negli ultimi anni della sua vita continuò ad essere consultato su tutte le questioni politiche di rilievo. La sua ultima opera a stampa, dedicata a Ferdinando II de' Medici fu il Restaurandae antiquae iurisprudentiae conatus, pubblicata nel 1666. Non gli riuscì, invece, di pubblicare le Historie delli avvenimenti de suoi tempi, in cui avrebbe voluto ricostruire la storia europea sino alla pace di Westfalia del 1648 e di cui aveva completato il primo volume già nel 1663, e materia di cui sperò anche la collaborazione del cardinal Mazzarino, tramite l'aiuto del fraterno amico Giannettino Giustiniani, quinta colonna del potente cardinale a Genova.Della Torre avrebbe voluto che le sue carte fossero trasferite segretamente in Francia subito dopo la sua morte per consentirne la pubblicazione, ma i Collegi ne disposero il sequestro.Alla sua morte, avvenuta nel marzo 1666, Giustiniani così lo descriveva a Hughes de Lionne (Ministro degli Esteri di Luigi XIV): « É morto il Seneca Christiano, il lume della Liguria, il più chiaro splendore di questa Republica, il signore Raffaele Della Torre, nell'età sua di 87 anni e mesi, alli 21 di questo con intrepidezza e franchezza incomparabili, dicendo che anche nel morire s'imparava, che essendogli sempre stata rappresentata la morte per spaventosa et horribile, la provava dolce, e tranquilla ».
