Add to basketThe first dictionary of ancient mythology, history and geography. Written by one of the foremost Latin grammatists of the 15th century, it became a very successful reference work and was in print until the 19th century. This is the first and only Hagenau edition. The work is a Latin lexicon in alphabetical order. It contains mythological, historical and geographical names from classical antiquity, and their explanations. Including: Cleopatra, the Hesperides and Sicily. This is followed by a lexicon of Greek and Hebrew names, an interesting Latin translation of the most important words from the "language of the Saracens", and a list of Latin plants, trees and minerals, with their German translations. The data on classical geography, history, daily life and literature was taken from classical literature.Hermannus Torrentinus (ca. 1450-1520), born as Hermann van der Beke, studied at the Latin school of Deventer and joined the Brethren of the Common Life. He was head of the Latin school in Zwolle until 1514, when he became completely blind. He has been called the foremost grammatist by his contemporaries and the majority of his works are Latin grammar books meant to be used in school. He attempted to simplify grammar for his students, but this was seen as heresy, causing him to add an "apologia" to later editions of these works. He also wrote multiple commentaries on classical authors like Ovid and Virgil. Nevertheless, Elucidarius carminum et historiarum is his most popular and well-known work. With the bookplate of Robert Clarence Pruyn mounted on the front pastedown. The edges and hinges of the boards show some signs of wear, with a water stain around the foot of the spine and throughout in the lower margin around the gutter, some off-setting on the blue endleaves from the broad turn-ins. With mild foxing to the first and last few leaves, the lower outer corner of leaf E1 has been restored, without affecting the text. Otherwise in good condition.l Adams T818 (different collation); British Museum, General catalogue, vol. 25, p. 266; GW X Sp. 6972; ISTC ih00073950 (7 copies); VD16 T 1597; Proctor 11647. 19th-century blind-tooled red morocco, with a gold-tooled centre-piece (a crown with a griffin, topped by another crown) on both sides, title, date and location of printing lettered in gold on the spine, gold- and blind-tooled broad turn-ins, gilt edges, blue endpapers. Add to basketAd 1: Extremely rare third Antwerp edition of a well known Latin dictionary of classical antiquity by Hermannus Torrentinus, covering people, Gods, topographic names, etc., taken mostly from classical literature and arranged in alphabetical order. Pafraet published the first edition at Deventer in 1498 as Elucidarius carminum et historiarum vel vocabularius poeticus. The book went through about 70 editions in 50 years, making it one of the most popular reference works of its time and certainly the most important classical dictionary. Torrentinus (d. ca.1520) was born in Zwolle, studied under Alexander Hegius at Deventer, joined the Brethren of the Common Life and taught at Groningen and Zwolle. He wrote several small books for use by his students, featuring texts by Virgil and Sabellico. Only two other copies of the present edition are known.Ad 2: First Cologne edition of a Latin account of classical Roman priests and magistrates by the Florentine Andreas Dominicus Floccus (d. 1452), writing under the name of the Roman historian Lucius Fenestella (49 B.C. - 21 A.D.). Almost 40 editions appeared over a century. The present edition includes three shorter works on the same subject by Pomponius Laetus. The final work is a useful list of Latin initials and abbreviations used in classical antiquity, with their meaning, by the late 1st century AD grammarian Valerius Probus. The Torrentius is bound after the Fiocchi. With the flourished signature of Reinier Tengnagel (d. 1565) on the first fly-leaf and his motto "Post tenebras spero lucem" on the facing parchment endleaf. Tengnagel succeeded Gabriel Mudeus as professor of law at the University of Louvain in 1546. As a neo-Latin poet he probably made extensive use of Torrentinus's classical dictionary. With extensive marginal manuscript notes on 3 pp. of the Torrentinus, one covered with 2 slips of paper, and a few shorter notes in the Foicchi. With a browned patch in the last leaves of the Torrentinus and an occasional minor marginal defect, but still in good condition. With some chips and stains in the vellum and 2 of the supports broken at the front hinge.l Ad 1: Netherlandish books 29537 (2 copies); NK 3968 (1 of same 2 copies); USTC 437361 (same 2 copies); ad 2: VD16, F 1643 (5 copies); USTC 671346 (same 5 copies); for the author: Diz. Biogr. degli Ital. 48, pp. 80-81; for the binding: W.K. Gnirrep & J.A. Szirmai, "Spines reinforced with metal rods in sixteenth-century limp parchment bindings", in: Quaerendo XIX (1989), pp. 117-140. With the title in an elaborate woodcut border (with 2 columns, 4 male and female figures, a roundel profile head and fruits, vegetables and flowers); a woodcut headpiece (the Evangelist Mark writing, with a lion), and three woodcut initials (2 series, white on black with a criblée background). Set in roman types. Pages: [88]; [88] ll. With: (2) [FIOCCHI, Andrea Dominico (Andras Dominicus FLOCCUS)] under the name of Lucius FENESTELLA. De magistratibus, sacerdotiisq[ue] Romanorum libellus, iamprimum nitori restitutus. Pomponii Laeti itidem de magistratibus & sacerdotiis, & praeterea diversis legibus Rom. Item Valerii Probi grammatici de literis antiquis opusculum.[Cologne, Hero Fuchs, 1527]. With the title in a finely cut 4-piece woodcut border (a portico with richly decorated columns with, at the head and foot, scenes showing Lucretia(?)), 7 woodcut decorated initials (4 series, mostly pictorial, the largest about 37 mm: E with greyhounds, O with a classical head, S with a fountain) and a vine-leaf ornament (Vervliet 8). Set in an Aldine-style italic type (with upright capitals), with headings in its own roman capitals and two larger sizes. 2 editions in 1 volume. 8vo. 16th-century(?) limp vellum (formerly used for a slightly thinner book), straight sewn on 3 pair of double, tanned leather thongs, laced through the vellum, with one 16th-century sheepskin parchment endleaf at front and back, spine-title in ink from foot to head, later paper title-label. The binding is an interesting example of a spine reinforced with a horizontal metal rod at the central sewing support to give more support and prevent the bookblock from becoming concaved or developing sharp kinks; probably bound in Flanders.

Ad 1: A rare 1529 Cologne edition, in the original Latin, of the most important and influential early encyclopaedia or dictionary of classical history, geography and mythology, including the author's preface to the first edition of 1498. It gives concise accounts, ranging from one line to more than half a page, of people, mythological figures, regions, cities, mountains, rivers, objects, etc. from classical times, gathered mainly from classical literature and arranged in alphabetical order. Ad 2: Rare first and only edition, in the original Latin, of the only work written by Aethon Johann von Freudenberg: a pamphlet exposing the abuses perpetrated by dishonest or incompetent doctors and the dangers of the inappropriate medications or treatments they prescribe. Dommer's extensive bibliography of the earliest books printed in Marburg overlooked this edition.Ad 1 with on the title-page a ca. 1563 donation(?) inscription for the San Pantaleon church (in Venice) by the heirs of the Florentine painter Francesco de Rossi (1510-1563), and on the blank final page 16 lines of manuscript notes (early 17th-century?), signed "Joannes Walker", perhaps the British student of that name (b. ca. 1606/07) who registered at Leiden University in 1632. Ad 2 with manuscript notes on an endleaf preserved from an earlier (late 16th- or early 17th-century?) binding. With water stains in the first few leaves of ad 1 and throughout ad 2, ad 2 also lacking its final blank leaf and with a small defect in the foot margin of the title-page, but both works still in good condition. Two rare editions by the same publisher (who had offices in both Cologne and Marburg), one an important classical dictionary and the other the first and only edition of a polemic against medical malpractice.l Ad 1: VD16, T1611 (2 copies); USTC 649866 (4 copies); WorldCat (2 copies); ad 2: Durling 1655; VD16, ZV6166 (3 copies); USTC 609523 (4 copies); WorldCat (7 copies); not in Dommer, Die ältesten Drucke aus Marburg (1527-1566). Sheepskin parchment (ca. 1700?), sewn on 4 supports, red edges, first title lettered in ink in the second spine compartment. With the title in an elaborate woodcut architectural border with the Cologne coat of arms in the head, the death of Cleopatra in the foot (flanked by roundel profile heads of a king and queen), further figures in the right and left sides (one labelled "Dionisius") and 3 putti, one holding a shield with a monogram or mark, perhaps of the artist or woodblock cutter.
