Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Allen-Gallegos, Maya - Cover Design (illustrator). First Printing. 169 Pages Indexed. No defects noted. New Mexico's state archives offer a rich collection of documents from the Spanish, Mexican, and Territorial periods. The author has mined this collection to produce a series of 36 articles that give us an idea of the stark reality of everyday life: what ordinary people went through to feed and protect their families, keep warm, worship their God, deal with government bureaucracies, and enjoy a few of life's pleasures. Previously published in periodicals with small local circulation, these essays are now available to the broader audience they deserve. In an extraordinary case from 1744, Juana Martin, the wife of Joseph de Armijo, accuse him of carrying on an affair with Getrudes de Segura. When the investigation was concluded, the offending couple was found guilty, and Getrudes sentenced to exile at El Paso del Norte for four years. Armijo was allowed to remain in Santa Fe, but was assessed the expenses of Getrudes's trip to El Paso. The formal sentence pointed out Armijo's failure to live up to his responsibilities as a husband and ordered him to live amicably with his wife during Getrudes' period of exile. Contents in Five Parts: Glimpses of Daily Life, Indian Relations, Crime and Punishment, Territorial Topics, and Biography.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Former New Mexico State Historian Robert J. Torrez draws from the marvelous treasure trove of primary documentation in New Mexicos Mexican-era archives to bring to light this little-known but crucial period in the states history. In a broadside dated August 27, 1821, addressed to Amados Compatriotas (his Beloved Compatriots), Alejo Garcia Conde, the Commanding General of the Internal Provinces of the West, advised New Mexicans that Mexicos long and difficult struggle for independence from Spain was over and called for the unity that would be needed to sustain and nourish their newfound liberty. Garcia Condes message opens with the archival collection that constitutes the Mexican Archives of New Mexico, 18211846, a documentary treasure that tells us much about the brief but defining twenty-five years during which New Mexico transitioned from being part of the Spanish Empire to a short-lived nascent Mexican Republic before the territory was conquered by the armed forces of the United States of America in 1846. In more than sixty broad-ranging essays, the author mines the administrative, military, judicial, and financial records, correspondence, and reports of governors, myriad government officials, military leaders, and citizens to explore the details of governance and bring to life the agricultural practices and commercial activities by which New Mexicans made their living and supported their families. These stories explore the often-contentious relations New Mexico had with the Native peoples that inhabited and surrounded the beleaguered territory while struggling to deal with the impact and influence of trappers, adventurers, entrepreneurs, and traders that made their way to New Mexico over the Santa Fe Trail as soon as independence was achieved.
