Bereits als 15-Jähriger gab er private Konzerte. Später betätigte er sich als selbständiger Gastwirt, unter anderem in Basel, und machte sich als Autor von Kochbüchern einen Namen. Zwischen 1978 und 1983 führte Vico Torriani das Restaurant Bonne Auberge am Spalenring in Basel.
