Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. 433, 1-160, 1-100p. 24 cm. 3 novels bound in a single volume. Includes an advertisement for other publications by Harper & Brothers after Sue's novel. Red half-leather binding with marbled boards and edges. Wear and tear to binding especially at corners and spine extremes. Pages yellowed and stained i…n some places. Reflects the low-paper quality of popular fiction published in the mid-nineteenth century. Considering the primarily wood-pulp paper used, the book remains in readable condition. Text is unmarked and arranged in columns throughout as was typical of the era. Good condition. Includes 3 novels published by Harper Bros. bound in a single volume: Eugene Sue's The Mysteries of Paris (originally a French-language 90-part serial), a melodrama depicting the various cultures and classes of modern Paris; Mrs. Hofland's The Unloved One (1844), touted as a "domestic" story that centres on a family's drama during a courtship; and William Harrison Ainsworth's Old St. Paul's (originally published in 1841) which dramatizes the story of the Great Fire of London in 1666. While the novels included are disparate in theme and character, together, they represent the diverse output of fiction in the Victorian era. Sue and Ainsworth in particular were influential novelists in their day. Ainsworth was even more popular than Dickens for a brief period in his career with his more famous Newgate novel, Jack Sheppard (1839).
