That significant boost came forty-plus years earlier when Mary Todd Lincoln bought their "Josephine" silverware pattern for the White House. Townsend was a journalist (New York Herald Tribune), playwright and novelist who had esteem as an specialist in 18th and 17th C. decorative arts. (He also edited "Some Letters of R. L. Stevenson.")The stories in the book at hand are set in Alexandria, Mount Ida, Nuremberg, Rome, Mexico and Lake George, the latter involving Lieutenant Paul Revere's engraving on shoe buckles for Mlle. Celine Paret. Townsend died unexpectedly (1922) when he succumbed to gas poisoning due to an open lighting jet in his New York apartment. A charming book.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The novels of Samuel Richardson are the essential topic of this book. Its main aim is to use Bakhtin's definition of polyphony as a way into Richardson's work and, in turn, to provide a basis from which to revise Bakhtin. After tracing the development of psychological realism in the eighteenth-century novel and the growing potential for autonomy in the fictional character in general, the book goes on to examine the potential for polyphony which first emerges in Pamela and reaches its height in Clarissa .Between editions of this momentous novel, Richardson felt compelled to make frantic attempts to control the reader's interpretation of the text. Lovelace - the villain of Clarissa - acquires a degree of autonomy that bears startlingly vivid testimony to the plurality of human identity itself. Sir Charles Grandison , Richardson's last novel, is a vivid retreat from the powerful effect of Lovelace.

Precious opal is a rainbow made tangible. Its spectral blaze of color moves, changes, intensifies, fades, or disappears with the slightest change of perspective. Opal's intriguing play of color and unique atomic arrangement have made it the subject of scientific probing from early optics in the 1850s to a high-tech photonics today. Equally challenging has been discovering opal's place in history. Opal, both precious and common, is found in disparate environments from the unbearable heat of the Australian outback to the higher elevations of the Canadian Rockies, from a centuries-old site in Slovakia to a number of little-known places in the American west. A natural, wearable stone with magical depth, movement, and color, opal is a truly phenomenal gemstone.
