1 vol. in-4° manuscrit (210 x 170 mm) : [1] f. 1 vol. 4to manuscript (210 x 170 mm): [1] f. (handwritten title in engraved frontispiece); 155 pp. 7 leaves of illustration accompanied by 2 leaves of explanation. Contemporary full parchment, smooth spine hand-titled, speckled edges. Interesting 18th-century Italian manuscript treatise on fortification. By an anonymous author, the work is written in fine black ink, with numerous two- and even three-dimensional diagrams and geometrical figures in the margins. At the end of the book, there are a total of 12 figures, some in color, depicting various fortifications seen from above or from the side. However, the author humbly acknowledges in the introduction that his treatise on fortifications is not intended to be a complete course on the subject: "This brief treatise on fortifications is but a pure introduction to this art; it is made only for the erudite entertainment of noble novices wishing to draw rather to amuse themselves on maps (translated from Italian)". The first part covers the essential mathematical basics (definitions, basic geometric concepts, drawing basic figures, etc.). The second and third parts cover the more advanced concepts needed to draw your first maps. Finally, the fourth and last part deals with the drawing of the most complex plans. Well-preserved in its original binding.
