Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some yellowing to extremities, spine and page fore edges, not price clipped (£3.60), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 242pp. An exciting fictionalised account of the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden (1746-92). The King was mortally wounded by a gunshot in the lower back during a masquerade ball, as part of an aristocratic - parliamentary coup attempt, but managed to assume command and quell the uprising before succumbing to septicaemia 13 days later, a period during which he received apologies from many of his political enemies. Only Anckarstrom, the actual gunman, suffered death as result, and according to the King's criminal policy, was only tortured after confessing voluntarily and being duly convicted. Gustav's immense powers were placed in the hands of a regency under his brother, Duke Carl until his son Gustav IV Adolf assumed the throne in 1796. The Gustavian autocracy hence survived until 1809, when it perished in another coup.

Pictorial Wraps. Condition: Near Fine. Reprint. Translated by William W. Austin. Includes bibliography, plus index. "This book is an introduction to the esthetics of music. The esthetics, which were of prime importance in thinking about music in the nineteenth century, are today sometimes suspected of being idle speculation. Yet judgments about music and every sort of musical activity are based on esthetic presuppositions. Carl Dahlhaus gives an account of developments in the esthetics of music from the mid eighteenth century onwards. He combines a historical and systematic approach. Central themes in music are grouped together to illustrate both the historical course of events and a systematic unity of the essential elements in the esthetics of music. For this edition, Professor Dahlhaus has provided an annotated bibliography. William Austin has added books for the English-speaking reader, and has also supplied notes to the text to help the student." A couple of pages with pencil underlining, light marginal toning, otherwise a very nice clean tight solid softcover copy. 115pp. SB-56.
