Anthology of verse of Zhou Enlai (1898 - 1976), lesding member of the nascent Chinese Communist Party and the first Premier of the People's Republic of China until his death. 11 Selected poems, written as a young man, range in time fr…om 1914 to 1922, that is from 16 years old to 24; an Appendix gives the original Chinese text. Non-political in thought, the first four are written in traditional style; ones from 1919 on are in free verse. The last and lengthy, "Parting in Life, Separation by Death" on martyrdom reveal philosophical thoughts on life and death . on humans being separated in life and eternally apart in death. The concluding lines may better be rendered, "Know Life and Death/Struggling to live/Fighting to die/What of eternal separation?".
