Soft cover. Condition: As New. Max Weber's early twentieth-century study of the religions and civilization of India is a great pioneering adventure in the sociology of ancient India. Weber's insight and analysis-especially his application of the sociological perspective to the work of classical Indologists and the religious texts available to him-were to add much to the store of the social scientist. Later, historians and archaeologists were to confirm a surprising number of Weber's theories. The central concern of this and other of Weber's studies of countries we today describe as "developing" was with the obstacles to industrialization and modernization. Weber anticipated by several decades a problem that has come to occupy the post-World War II world. Why had these countries failed to display the full consequences of those rationalizing tendencies which, to Weber's mind had so powerful an affinity with the scientific-technical transformation of the West? He isolated religious institutions and the key social strata which mediate them to wider society as crucial for the original formation of social-psychological orientations to the practical concerns of life and, hence, for receptivity or resistance to industrialization.

Hardcover. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 220 pages. Originally published in German as a special supplemental volume of the journal PHILOSOPHISCHE RUNDSCHAU in 1967. A very good copy with spotting to the page block; in a dust jacket with color fading to the spine. For two decades the German edition of this book has been a standard reference point for students of the philosophy of the social sciences in Germany. Today it still stands as a unique and masterful guide to the major problems and possibilities in this field."On the Logic of the Social Sciences "foreshadowed the direction in which methodological discussions have traveled since it appeared and anticipated the problems they presently face. Habermas's statement of the principal issues is concise and elegant, and his own original resolution of them is of continuing relevance. He considers the main lines of thought pursued by epistemologists and methodologists of the social sciences, from neo-Kantianism to behaviorism, and from problems of measurement to those of interpretive logic, in a sustained and provocative argument that involves analysis and critique at every point and ends with his own sharply profiled position.Beginning with the turn of the century debates on the distinction between natural and cultural sciences, Habermas discusses the relationship between sociology and history. He takes up the problem of a general theory of social action, focusing first on the nature of "interpretive understanding" and then on the scope and limits of functionalist explanation. In the concluding sections, he draws on psychoanalysis and classical social theory to sketch the outlines of his view of sociology as a critical theory of the present. Along the way he provides a great deal of material that is useful in understanding his own work.Jurgen Habermas is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Frankfurt. "On the Logic of the Social Sciences" is included in the series Studies in Contemporary German Social Thought, edited by Thomas McCarthy.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Type: Hardback 16th Century French History--Newly Translated and Edited from the Latin Text of J. B. Howaert (Brussels, 1632). Hardcover Book in Very Good Condition with a Good Dust Jacket in clear archival protective jacket cover. These letters to Maximilian II concerning De Busbecq's missions to the French Court touch upon many aspects of the history of France during a critical period of the 16th century. These 37 letters cover the period from Aug, 1574 to Feb. 1576 . They present a clearer understanding of the religious strife, political unrest, and economic difficulties which threatened the security of the country and complicated the relations of the Valois monarchy with neighboring states. Binding of green cloth w/red titles on spine and front, very clean and unmarked with lightly scuffed bottom corners and spine ends, and gently bumped upper corners. Tight and solid sewn binding. Endpaper has a scuffy area in the center, as from something being removed, a bookplate perhaps. Pages are quite clean, completely unmarked, lightly toned. Period jacket in greens and reds is generally clean, rubbed, on front; spine and back are age and/or dust dulled; spine ends chipped, other light edgewear. It does present a rather nice old historical look. 180 pages. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. Bookman Associates, New York, 1961.

First edition thus. 8vo; plain, stapled wrappers, iv, 26 pp. An English translation of German anthropologist, Eugen Fischer's, lecture on the racial genesis of Hebrews. Fischer's lecture was meant to be more scientific than political, although the implications of differentiating between the racial composition of Jews and Northern Europeans under National Socialism is obvious.
