Add to basketFirst editions, gilt-lettered on the front cover: "Clara Sandford Bramston, the works of her brother, given by her father on her marriage". Clara (1800-1844) was the author's sister and her wedding took place two months before his early death. This copy is a touching memento of sisterly affection and her"very close relationship with her brotherThomas" (ODNB). Clara is an engaging figure: ODNB remarks that her mind "was nimble and her pen well practised, as demonstrated by her diary", edited from the original 28 manuscript volumes and published in 1925 as The Journal of Clarissa Trant. Serious-minded, she "did not read fiction [and] travelled extensively while young, and, though not associated with the highest society, she had contact with some of the great names of the period such as Lord John Russell, the Prince of Orange, Talleyrand, Sir Charles Stuart, George Canning, the Duke of Wellington, and Daniel O'Connell". On 2 January 1832 she married John Bramston, future Dean of Winchester (whose armorial bookplate is on the frontispiece recto). Her brother, a very promising young officer, died on 13 March of that year, at her house, the vicarage in Great Baddow, Essex, "his constitution shattered by hard service in various climes" (United Service Journal). Thomas (1805-1832) was the son of Major General Nicholas Trant (1769-1839), who served in Egypt under Sir Ralph Abercromby and distinguished himself in the Peninsular War, where he led Portuguese irregular troops, most famously at Coimbra and the Mondego River. Thomas joined the 38th Foot in 1820 and served in India, gaining a deep knowledge of the Kingdom of Ava (upper Burma, Myanmar), and fought in the First Anglo-Burmese War under Sir Archibald Campbell (dedicatee of Two Years). Trant later spent a year with the 1st West India Regiment in the West Indies - a notorious graveyard for British soldiers, where climate and disease took a terrible toll - before going on to Greece and Ireland. Two Years in Ava was positively reviewed on publication and holds a place as an important early account of the kingdom. Of the Narrative, Blackmer notes that Trant "travelled extensively though Greece and made his way to Constantinople" and that there is "a lively and very interesting description of Greek social life". Mounted at the front of the volume are clippings of several obituaries (one with a handmade mourning border), the identifying captions presumably in Clara's hand, and an autograph letter signed by the Duke of Wellington (Stratfield Saye, 22 July 1827) thanking her father for sending a copy of Two Years ("which I will read with the utmost attention and interest"). The final leaf carries two manuscript extracts from reports by his commanding officers, praising Thomas's service ("a gallantry of conduct that cannot be surpassed"). The book passed down through the family, eventually coming into the possession of Nicholas Hammond, Professor of Greek at the University of Bristol. In his loosely inserted letter (17 May 1963), he thanks "Mr Beloe" for gifting him the book. Beloe was Trant's great-great-nephew: in 1904 Clara's daughter, Margaret, married the Reverend Robert Douglas Beloe. Atabey 1234; Blackmer 1671. United Service Journal and Naval and Military Magazine, 1832 part I. 3 works bound in 1 vol., octavo (215 x 135 mm). Two Years: Lithographic frontispiece on india paper by W. Gauci after Trant, printed by Engelmann on india paper and mounted to second blank as issued, 3 folding lithograph maps. With 3 pp. of in-text musical scores. Narrative: Engraved frontispiece and 5 plates (4 engraved by S. Freeman, plan of Dardanelles lithographed by Dean & Maunday), 3 wood-engraved in-text vignettes and letterpress tables. Contemporary dark red crushed morocco, sometime rebacked with original decorative gilt spine laid down, boards with gilt double fillet border enclosing ornate gilt panel, front board with gilt-lettered presentation inscription, gilt edge rules, broad gilt dentelles, pale green moiré silk doublures and endpapers, edges gilt. Some scratches and abrasions to binding, tips slightly worn, Two Years bound without the half-title, lacking list of illustrations to Narrative, front free endpaper chipped at fore edge, light marginal tide marks to contents, scattered foxing (largely to plates), stub tears to folding maps repaired: this remains an attractive copy.
