On June 25, 1878, Buel strangled Catharine Mary Richards into unconsciousness, beat her to death with a milking stool, and violated her corpse. In an attempt to mask the crime, he staged the body inside a bull pen to make it appear as though she had been victims of a fatal animal goring. This work stands as a chilling, highly detailed example of late-19th-century American true-crime ephemera, complete with the culprit's final written confession.
