The religious traditions of Asia and Europe, the 'East' and 'West' of the title, are sometimes regarded as being in sharp contrast with each other, the one 'mystical', the other 'prophetic'. Whenever their religions are not so contrasted they are usually treated in isolation from each other: the religion of Israel, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. Dr Ling, however, stresses that there is considerable overlap and interpenetration between the two types and areas, and that it is important to see the historical inter-relation between these religions and to observe how, during given periods of history, there are parallel developments or significant divergences. He covers the period 1500 B.C. to the present time, providing an outline of the development of Asian and European religious traditions and institutions, and discussing the social and economic factors involved in the development of religous traditions, although he shows that such factors alone do not account for the religious life of man. Dr Ling goes on to interpret the contemporary significance of these religions and their potential for the future life of humanity. He suggests that the present stage of religious advance is characterised by open-endedness towards the future; not all religions exhibit this character, but none has yet exhausted the possibilities of development. This book is intended for use an an introduction to the study of religion. Although reference is made in the text to sources of further information, the book can be used without reference to them. On page 6 there is one pair of brackets in red. Otherwise I did not see any markings in the text. I noticed that four pages had been previously dog eared: 55/56; 191/192; 263/264; and 321/322. Smyth sewing is a method of bookbinding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Each folded signature is sewn together individually with multiple stitches and then joined with other signatures to create the complete book block. This is the traditional and best method of bookbinding.

Corners are largely sharp, but have a wee bit of discoloration due to shelfwear. Top rear corner is starting to fray. Pages 233 thru 237 have some spots less than the size of a dime from coffee or like substance. There are two such spots on the fore edge. The former owner did use a pen to outline some pages and underline on less than half dozen pages. Square and tight. Not Ex Library. DJ is largely covers the book, but has a number of small tears at the top of the front panel and a larger 2" or so tear on the back panel near the spine. Chipping to the top/bottom of the spine and some corners. DJ is price clipped.

The book has sound hinges and is not cocked. There are a few words on the first free endpage; otherwise pages are clean, unmarked and undamaged. Exterior covers are clean and the gilt lettering on the spine is bright. There is a small bump on the back cover and one shallow dent in the top edge of the back cover. No bumped corners or rubbing to extremities. The dust jacket is clean with light toning (age tanning) to the white portions (inside flaps). It has a single small tear and a light crease at the top edge of the inside front flap and a couple of other light creases near the top edge. Very little wear otherwise. It has been put in a clear archival sleeve to keep it looking great. The book, dust jacket and sleeve will be bubble-wrapped and carefully packed in a sturdy box to ensure safe transit. This is a heavy, oversize book that will probably require extra funds for shipping outside of the United States.
