- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Louis Joseph Trimolet (1812-1843) was a painter, draughtsman, engraver and lithographer. "Are there many people today, even among artists, who know the so witty, so light and so mordant plates with which Trimolet, of melancholy memory, endowed Aubert's comic almanacs a few years ago?" (Baudelaire, Curiosités esthétiques). This little manuscript is a "Preface in which the author seeks to justify his petty passion or monomania". "In my youth, unable to acquire the pieces that were offered to my eyes, despite their little value, I contented myself with drawing them to keep a souvenir. Oh, if I could have spent only ten thousand francs in the years from 1815 to 1825, what a treasure I would now have in works of art!" Having always lived in poverty, Trimolet must have had a modest collection. But he did own an ewer by Bernard de Palissy, which he mentions here. "This catalog - but was it really written? - "being written for myself, my wife and my child, I can indulge in reflections that amateurs and connoisseurs would find puerile." The bulk of this manuscript consists of considerations on the collection and trade of objets d'art, followed by historical reflections on Bernard de Palissy's ceramics and enamelled earthenware. Note in pencil at the bottom of the cover: "M Stroehlin". This is most certainly Ernest Stroehlin (1844-1907), historian and great bibliophile from Geneva, author of a work on two enamellers: "Jean Petitot et Jacques Bordier: deux artistes huguenots du XVIIe siècle". Stroehlin left three notes of several lines in the margins of the manuscript. - -.
