During the mutiny, he commanded at Sabathu. Trotter retired in 1862 with the rank of Captain. Trotter authored several publications, including "History of the British Empire in India, 1844 to 1862," "Warren Hastings: A Biography" (1878), "History of India under Queen Victoria, from 1836 to 1880".
