Collated, complete.This is a lovely horticultural guide to the types of wildflowers that are native to Greece. This work provides the Latin classification of each flower, as well as their modern Greek names.Contents include a foreword by Sir Sydney Waterlow, a note by Ismene Dixon, an editor's preface, with notes and comments on the wild flowers of Attica. The work begins with 'Clematis Cirrhosa L.', and ends with 'Arisarum Vulgare'.Published posthumously after Atchley's death, and was prepared for publication by William Bertram Turrill, an English botanist. Turrill was responsible for the mathematical classification of leaf shapes, and received the Order of the British Empire in 1955.With a former owner's label to the front free endpaper. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with light shelf wear to back strip tail. Dust wrapper lacking back strip, and thus with front and rear wraps detached from one another. Chipping and small losses to wrap heads. Front wrap age toned. Small handling marks to wraps. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. This is a rare, early Iowa history book, "Historical Reminiscences of the City of Des Moines" by H.B. Turrill. 1857 1st edition; Redhead & Dawson; Des Moines, Iowa. "Together with a Full Description of the City and County, and an Enumeration of the Various Advantages Which the Surrounding Region Offers to Immigrants." The book contains numerous full-page illustrations of city buildings, and a partial (see condition description) fold-out birds-eye view of the city. There are 30 pages of local advertisements at the back in a variety of typefaces. PROVENANCE: This was the personal copy of Des Moines Mayor William H. McHenry (the 7th Mayor of the city) - his signature and address appears on the front pastedown; his signature appears again on the rear pastedown. On the title page, McHenry writes "See Page 70" - on page 70, McHenry is listed as a City Officer: "Mayor - W.H. McHenry." Here are some examples of the contents: Treaty with the Indians; Arrival of the first Steamboat; First Dwelling House built in Polk County; Number of the Troops; Indian Traders; First County Election; First Groceries; Post Office; First Wedding in Polk County; Early Church History; Fears of Settlers; The Reeves Mob; The Perkins and Flemming War; Great Flood of 1851; Holland Mob; Kidnapping Scheme of Meacham; Incorporation of Fort Des Moines; War at Fort Dodge and consequent excitement at Des Moines; History of the Des Moines Newspaper; Inducements to Immigration.and much more. Condition: There is a small bit of clear tape affixed at the top-right corner of the front cover. The top and bottom edges of the spine are worn down with cloth loss. There are 2 horizontal tears at the center of the spine. Small cloth tears at the cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Unfortunately, the folding map at the front has torn with a sizable portion missing at the top-left quadrant. Dampstaining at the bottom of most pages - the stain ranges in size from small and barely noticeable at the lower-inner corners, to large that affect the bottom-third of the page. Heavy foxing to the end papers and pastedowns, with occasional mild foxing to the text pages. Mayor McHenry's signatures appears in ink on the front and rear pastedowns. Overall in Fair condition.
