This book presents a historical record of the events leading up to the British forces' attack on Rangoon and Martaban in 1852, sparked by a series of unresolved diplomatic incidents. The author, who accompanied the expedition as a chaplain, provides an eyewitness narrative of the events, detailing the hostilities between the British and Burmese forces and the subsequent blockade of Burmese ports. The book offers insights into the political dynamics and cultural misunderstandings that shaped this conflict, shedding light on the complexities of international relations and the challenges of diplomacy in the mid-19th century. Through its firsthand account, this book contributes to a greater understanding of the historical context and consequences of the Anglo-Burmese conflict. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. Two facsimile copies of uncertain age bound together in printed green paper covered boards with blue cloth spine overlaid with more modern green leatherette 15 x 23cm. The front cover only mentions Baker's work. No indication of who produced this or when, however I am very roughly estimating mid-20th century based on the appearance and condition. No like copies found - Copac and OCLC record only the first editions of each, and a modern reprint of the Baker. 1. Baker's Recent Operations (1852): vii + 78pp including original title page, with only the frontispiece illustration reproduced, plus two much more modern looking folding copies of two plates (The Attack of the Dunnoo Stockade; Rangoon in 1852) tipped on to the ffep. 2. Moong Shoay Doon's Journal (1836) (1) + 32 + 31pp with original title page and parallel Burmese and English text. Covers good only with some staining, tears and loss of paper. Binding secure. Interiors lightly tanned and very good apart from some worming that has penetrated through the boards.
