Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A privately printed, limited edition of an 1883 volume that memorializes Daniel Tyler, a Civil War Union general who was also a founding figure in the history of Anniston, Alabama and the grandfather of First Lady of the United States Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt. This volume is inscribed by Edmund L Tyler, one of Gen. Tyler's sons, to Rev. Wallace Carnahan, the first rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Anniston. The book contains autobiographical writings by Tyler -- notably narrative focusing on his military career and his prominent role in the Civil War battle at Bull Run. (Edmund Tyler contributes additional notes about Gen. Tyler's military life.) The volume also includes correspondence written by Gen. Tyler and reminiscences about and tributes to Gen. Tyler. Tyler's importance to Anniston, Alabama history came through his ownership interest in the iron works and regional railroad that were central to the town's founding and development. Inscribed by Edmund L. Tyler on a front page to Wallace Carnahan. ("Rev. Wallace Carnahan with affectionate regards, Edmund L Tyler.") Brown cloth, 186 page. One of 200 copies printed. The covers have heavy rubbing and the original dye has largely dissipated giving the covers a mottled appearance. The interior pages are nice shape except for a dampstain on the bottom quarter of a group of eight pages. These pages include the title page and the frontspiece portrait. Photos available upon request. Signed by Author(s).
