No Binding. Condition: Very Good. On 8 Oct 1863, John Tyndall sends his regrets and encouragement to (most likely the medical publisher) John Churchill following a conversation they have had regarding the founding of a new scientific journal; he states his busyness as the reason for non-participation. "Dear Sir, On reviewing the work which I have at present in hand I find it to be of such a magnitude as to deter me from committing myself to anything further at present. To my regret therefore I find myself unable to take part in your proposed scientific journal. Still I am persuaded that such a journal of wisely conducted [sic] would be both commercially successful, & would do an immense amount of good. The subject, as I told you yesterday, has more or less occupied the thoughts of some of my friends and myself for the last two or three years. Yours very truly John Tyndall" This is an autograph letter signed on three pages of ivory laid paper. Approx. 3½" x 5 ½."  Item #A01739 John Tyndall (1820-1893) was a man of sciencephysicist, geologist and atmospheric scientist. He is best known for his study of diamagnetism, discoveries in the field of infrared radiation, and the radiative properties of gasses now known as greenhouse effect. His discoveries also led him to speculate on climate change. As a liberal thinker, he also argued for the separation of science and religion. He taught physics at the The Royal Institution and was a prolific writer; he wrote numerous articles on the subjects of science, religion, literature and travel. John Churchill (1801-1875) was an English medical publisher. He published several medical periodicals and the notable works of scientist such as Erasmus Wilson's Anatomist's Vade,  Golding Bird's Manual of Natural Philosophy and Diagnosis of Urinary Deposits, and George Fownes's Manual of Chemistry. Condition: In excellent condition. Signed by Author(s).

En anglais "I fear the word « elastic » must stand. It fairly represents what I felt when Mr Carlyle's fingers closed upon mine. Yours faithfully". ["Je crains que le mot " élastique " doive être conservé. Il représente fidèlement ce que j'ai ressenti lorsque les doigts de M. Carlyle se sont refermés sur les miens". Le mot « elastic » fut bien conservé dans le texte imprimé chez Appleton :"[] that gave to the pressure of her hand an elastic intensity which I have not noticed elsewhere". Tyndall, John. Autograph Letter Signed, 19 July 1872, written in the year he published major work on atmospheric heat absorption that established the physical basis of what is now termed the greenhouse effect. Addressed to poet Matthew Arnold, the letter situates Tyndall within the intellectual networks of Victorian Britain at a moment when his experimental investigations into radiant heat and atmospheric gases were reshaping scientific understanding of climate. "Firstly," he writes, "I promised to send you for a copy a little book about the glaciers, which might have added interest this visit to Switzerland.," signing "John Tyndall." His reference to glaciers is historically resonant: Tyndall's mountaineering studies in the Alps informed his investigations into heat transfer, building upon Fourier's earlier insights and leading to his experimental demonstration in the 1860s and early 1870s that certain gases, including carbon dioxide, absorb and re radiate heat within the atmosphere. In 1872 he expanded these findings in published form, providing a systematic treatment of heat absorption by gases that laid groundwork for later climate science. Tyndall, John. Autograph Letter Signed. 19 July 1872. Two pages, approximately 5.25 x 8.25 inches, signed "John Tyndall." The correspondence belongs to a period of sustained productivity in which Tyndall advanced experimental physics while promoting public scientific education and free thought. In the year following this letter he published The Forms of Water in Clouds & Rivers, Ice & Glaciers (1873), further integrating glaciology with atmospheric physics. Beyond climate related research, Tyndall also conducted experiments on airborne particulates and sterilization, developing a method later termed "Tyndallization" in support of germ theory during exchanges with Louis Pasteur. The present letter thus emerges from the same decade in which Tyndall's work unified laboratory experimentation, alpine field study, and public scientific discourse. Light crease along original fold, age related toning and light foxing; thin vertical tear along left margin approximately 2.5 cm not affecting text; manuscript clear and legible. Overall condition: good. Signed.
