Exceptionally scarce illustrated booklet for schools detailing the history of different tribal cultures in southern Africa. Deeply patronising text, but excellent illustrations from Tyrrell. In good internal order. Neat signature to first page. A little light wear to cover and small closed tear to base of spine. This is a charity sale on behalf of Friends of Morston Church (reg.1099831). 8vo. 48pp.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Pamphlet. 48p., splendid artwork in colors throughout (Tyrrell's portraits of costumed youth are surely more lasting than Carel's boilerplate text), staple-fastened booklet in 8x7 inch color wraps. Pre-Mandela, of course, perhaps composed about the time Mandela was first incarcerated. Complete but damaged: spinefold abraded, small adhesion scars to both covers, center-fold with its doublespread painting is detached from the exposed staples, mild handling signs within the text, cover art a little smudged and sunned (besides the above-mentioned sticker scars). Worthwhile even in this shape.

4to; original blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pictorial endpapers; pp. 276, incl. index; beautiful full-page, colour illustrations by Barbara Tyrrell; line drawings in text. Occasional light foxing. Very good to near fine condition. "The heritage of the black peoples of Southern Africa is a rich and enormously varied one, deep rooted in the soil of the past but still a vital force in the present. Almost unaltered in the rural areas, it is, however, undergoing rapid change in the cities in reaction to contact with Western cultures, and is fast disappearing. In African Heritage a combination of text and pictures reveals the traditional beliefs, customs and ritual that shape the everyday lives of many of the black peoples in this region. Barbara Tyrrell's paintings represent a lifetime of study and travel. They capture the flavour of African life in vivid detail, the brilliance and colour of traditional dress, and the charged atmosphere of a ritual such as the python dance of the Venda, performed at night in the light of a leaping fire.".
The author artist travelled alone through tribal southern Africa and "brought with her a friendship and an understanding of tribal taboos" to observe dress and initiations, then describe and paint or draw them. Map on endsheets. -- Hardcover, 206 pages, 9x11.5 inches. Condition: near fine (small label on endsheet) with near fine dust jacket.

First Edition
First edition. 4to; pictorial boards; endpaper map; pp. (l) + 206, incl. index; profusely illustrated, largely in full colour. Backstrip very slightly rubbed at head; trace of foxing to top edge. Very good condition. "This is a monumental work of the greatest historical and artistic value; and it could only have been accomplished by one whose devoted application and adventurous spirit took her to the natural habitat and environment of her subjects. Alone in her caravan for many years until her marriage, she travelled into the most primitive areas of Southern Africa to find her models at home. She brought with her a friendship and an understanding of tribal taboos that enabled her to discover and portray the intimate details of dress and behaviour in the most secret initiatory performances. From this have come to us details of great historical value, which would otherwise have been lost and forgotten.".
