Uhlig (1907 - 1993) war US-amerikanischer Chemiker, Metallurge und Professor am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Er leitete dort 29 Jahre lang das Corrosion Laboratory. Er war Präsident der Electrochemical Society und gilt als Begründer der modernen, quantitativen Korrosionswissenschaft, die Korrosionsprobleme nicht mehr nur empirisch-beschreibend, sondern streng elektrochemisch berechenbar machte. Das Buch konzentriert sich bei der Untersuchung von Korrosion auf deren elektrochemische Ursachen. Uhlig behandelt dabei die Thermodynamik (Potenzial-pH-Diagramme/Pourbaix-Diagramme), die Kinetik der Polarisation, Passivierungsschichten, interkristalline Korrosion sowie den Schutz durch Opferanoden (kathodischer Schutz) und Inhibitoren. Das Spannende: Uhlig verbindet seine Korrosionsbefunde mit Hochrechnungen volkswirtschaftlicher Schäden. Wenn man seine Befunde liest, kennt man die Substitutionsorte: Brücken, Pipelines und Schiffe - Uhlig lieferte die elektrochemischen Grundlagen für den kathodischen Korrosionsschutz. Dabei schützen "Opferanoden" oder Fremdstromsysteme kritische Bauteile. Rohrleitungen: Öl-, Gas- und Wasserpipelines konnten dadurch im Erdreich oder im Meer jahrzehntelang betrieben werden, ohne durchzurosten. Edelstähle und Legierungen: Statt durch Ausprobieren (Empirie) verstand man dank Uhlig genau, wie viel Chrom, Nickel oder Molybdän einem Stahl hinzugefügt werden muss, um eine stabile Schutzschicht (Passivität) zu erzeugen. Robuste Reaktoren: Chemische Großanlagen arbeiten oft mit hochkorrosiven Säuren und Laugen. Uhligs Arbeiten halfen bei der Auswahl der richtigen Materialien für Reaktoren und Ventile. Einsatz von Inhibitoren: Seine Forschung zeigte, welche chemischen Zusätze (Inhibitoren) Flüssigkeiten beigemischt werden müssen, um den korrosiven Angriff auf die Rohrinnenwände zu stoppen. Aus der lückenhaften Aufzählung industrieller Anwendungen ergibt sich der Sinn des Buches in der Frankfurter Konzernbibliothek: so baute Konzerntochter Lurgi in den 1970er-Jahren weltweit gigantische Industrieanlagen (Raffinerien, Schwefelsäurefabriken, Meerwasserentsalzungen). Diese Anlagen arbeiteten mit hochaggressiven Medien bei extremen Temperaturen. Uhligs Buch war für die Lurgi-Konstrukteure das absolute Pflichtenheft, um Werkstoffe (wie Spezialstähle oder Titan) chemisch korrekt auszuwählen und Schutzstromeinrichtungen exakt zu dimensionieren Die Erstauflage erschien 1963.
