"Seed is the best bet of nature against the ravages of time and all other adversities. Man started appreciating the intense and immense potential of seeds long time ago; further he devised technologies to harness the insitu potential of seeds. The role of seed and seed technology in improving the country's food production needs no overemphasis. Today, seeds are celebrated as a basic tool for secured food supply, a carrier of new technologies, so on and so forth. Never the less, the seed industry has grown into a dictator of modern agriculture. This book is designed such that it takes the initiative to sensitize the students to scientific learning of seed science and technology. It contains features to explain, why seed science and technology is an important and practical subject. Each chapter begins with 'goal' statements. This identifies what the student can expect to learn through the chapter. The principles and basics of each topic is dealt at length to provide the students all the facts which will prepare them to appreciate the applications of seed science and technology. Each chapter is enriched with 'activity' section. This guides the students step--by-step, to conduct experiments and learn the intricacies. Sufficient space is provided for incorporation the 'data and observations' after conducting each experiment. Sets of review questions called 'making sure' have been placed as the concluding part of each chapter. These questions provide another means of self-evaluation. In short, this book is tailor-made to eliminate the need for mechanical task of voluminous record writing and drawing and to motivate the student to think and analyse different aspects of science and technology." Seed certification and legislation. Glossary. Bibliography. Seed is an indispensable gadget for all people involved with plant kingdom. Seed by itself is a fascinating piece of art and Daphne J. Osborne admire thus the almost universal formation of the dry seed and its revival on the addition of water is nothing short of an evolutionary miracle. Understanding of molecular mechanisms of seed and development of technologies for best exploitation of seed's potential is all about seed science and technology. It is important to sensitize the students about the basic mechanisms of seed and the applicability of seed related technologies. This book is written for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students or a layperson that is interested to be introduced to tree seed technology. The chapters of the book are arranged in such a way that the reader first gets acquainted with the intricacies of the tree seed well. Later on the biological systems of seed are dealt with to describe how seeds form develop mature germinate or remain dormant. Thereafter details of quality seed production are elaborated with due importance to the influence of agroclimatic and pollution factors involved. All the efforts generated to produce quality seeds should culminate in obtaining high vigour seedlings for which seed handling techniques are imperative. Therefore chapter has been allocated to elaborate the methodologies and precautions to be followed during seed collection extraction drying processing treating and storing. The chapter on synthetic seed production is included to reflect the large strides made in the recent years in the field of plant propagation. In order to make available right quality of seed testing and certification of seeds has been implemented for agricultural and horticultural crops in India through seed acts. The same is yet to be extended for tree seeds also. The seed testing and certification procedures pertaining to trees seeds are provided in two chapters. The book is designed to be the straight forward and reader friendly. Figures and tables are provided at all necessary places to sustain the interest of the reader. 199 pp.

The Forests are playing a significant role in the economic prosperity and ecological stability of the country. The Indian Forests faces severe biotic and abiotic pressure leads to shrinking of its geographical distribution and the forest based industries are at the cross roads. The rate of deforestation at an alarming rate of 1.5 million ha year-1 and has fortunately come down rapidly with the enactment of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. Currently, the forest area in the country is around 23.81 per cent and in Tamil Nadu, it is around 18.16 per cent which is much low against the mandated requirement of 33.0 per cent. Not only is the forest wealth of the country very poor but also its productivity in terms of Mean Annual Increment (MAI) is also one of the lowest. The less forest area coupled with the low productivity of Indian forest has ushered in a total mismatch between the demand and supply of both domestic and industrial wood requirement. The scientific team of industrial agroforestry consortia of Forest College and Research Institute has brought out a book on "Industrial Agroforestry: Perspectives and Prospectives" to address the needs of stake holders at all levels of Production to Consumption System. This book incorporated the India's Forest and Agroforestry situation and the need for industrial wood plantations. It also comprises the status of various wood based industries like pulp and paper, plywood, matchwood, dendro power, biofuel and the requirement for different raw materials and the associated supply chain management. The incorporation of Tree Improvement, Clonal Forestry, Precision Silviculture, Profitable Agroforestry Models, Supply and Value Chain Management and Price Forecasting are some of the needed information addressed in this book which would be very useful to all wood based industrial persons, academicians and researchers of SAUs, ICAR, ICFRE Institutes, graduating students, practicing foresters, professional foresters and forest entrepreneurs.
