Accordion. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: good. Small quarto (about 18cm x 25cm). Unpaginated. Accordion-style format, with paper-covered beveld boards and aplpied printed label. Near fine, with uneven fading to the boards. In the original paper covering (a kind of dust jacket) with some large chips and commensurat…e uneven fading; good only. Rare with this paper covering. The book shows, step-by-step, how a complicated color Japanese woodblock print is made, with each color element depicted on the left panel, then the right panel showing the entire print up to that stage in the process. The first text leaf states: "The Picture: One of 'Twelve Sketches of Handicraft Arts for Women' by Utamaro (1753-1806), one of the outstanding Ukiyoe artists in the Edo Period. He has portrayed women here working at their hand-looms." This and similar volumes are scarce in the trade; we haven't found one in the dust jacket.
