A physiological disquisition on the biblical Song of Songs, in which the ideal form of feminine beauty is described. The author uses from the mystical love poem to weave and argue his physiological conclusions, juxtaposing women with various animals, displaying the variations and vicissitudes of facial features, and adding his own verse commentary on the topic. A singular work of speculative physiognomy and biblical criticism. Although physiognomy had been rejected by eminent scientists like Leonardo di Vinci, it continued to be widely practiced and taught by creative and idiosyncratic thinkers and writers like Sir Thomas Browne and Giambattista Della Porta (who also used the physiognomy of animals in his work) in the 17th century, and remained popular through the 19th century. This 1662 work is a particularly distinctive part of the psuedoscience's corpus. This copy features the bookplate of Julia Parker Wightman, daughter of prominent New York City physician Dr. Orrin Sage Wightman. Julia Wightman was known as an antiquarian and bookbinder with an impressive collection of rare books. Following her father's death in 1965, she converted his offices in the family home into a bindery, where she created bindings and cases for some of the volumes in her collection. A member of the Hroswitha Club and Grolier Club, she bequeathed her collection to the Morgan Library and Museum upon her death in 1994. 8o: *4A-D8 [$4 signed] pp. [8] 1-60 [1], ill. Different versions of printer's device on title and on last (otherwise blank) leaf. 5 works in 1 volume. 4to. Contemporary limp vellum. Five neo-classical studies reflecting the wide range of interests of the celebrated Flemish humanist Joest Lips (1547-1606), who initiated the renewed study of Roman military methods in the Netherlands. The essay on the Greatness of Rome in dialogue form contains several chapters of military interest: book 2, ch.10 on the public expenses of maintaining an army, book 4, ch. 3 on justice and clemency in war, and book 4, ch. 4 on the strength of the Roman army. The treatise on public spectacles or gladiatorial games remains a valuable source for our knowledge of ancient combat. The evocative engraved illustrations by Otto Vaenius (1556-1629), a teacher of Rubens, include: folding plates showing 'meridiani' armed with swords only fighting at a banquet for the entertainment of guests, gladiators performing at a funeral, sham-fighting with wooden staves and fighting to the death with swords in an amphitheatre; half-page engravings depicting a variety of combats: women and dwarfs (favoured by the emperor Domitian), a 'retirarius' or net fighter armed with a trident against a 'secutor' or heavily armed swordsman, a 'mirmillon' with helmet, shield and sword against a Thracian with buckler and curved dagger, a Samnite with body amour, oblong shield and short sword, essedarians throwing javelins from chariots, 'andabatae' or horsemen with closed helmets and spears, 'dimachaeri' with swords in both hands, 'lacearii' with lasso and sword, 'postulaticii' or heavily armed prize fighters who made only special appearances, and 'catervarii' who fought in bands. The famous study of Roman amphitheatres, here in the last edition corrected by the author, is dedicated to the great geographer Abraham Ortelius (Funck, p354 & Fowler 183 (note). The plates show the Colosseum with gladiatorial games in progress, and the theatres of Verona, Pola, Nîmes, and Doué. The study of the Vestal Virgins, illustrated with delicate engravings of coins and cameos, is followed by a description of great libraries of the ancient world in Egypt, Greece and Rome. Lipsius, a professor at Louvain, was a close friend of Plantin and his successor Moretus, who between them, published nearly all of his works. A freshly preserved volume from the Nordkirchen Library with bookplate.

Brossura. Condition: nuovo. Edited by Agnès Guiderdoni-Bruslé, Ralph Dekoninck, Aline Smeesters. Pages: 108 p.Illustrations:44 b/w Language(s):Latin, French. Publication Year:2018. Brepols. ISBN: 978-2-503-56966-6.

8vo, pp. 8 p.l., 207, [9]; text in Latin, German, French and Dutch; engraved title by G. de Lairesse; printed title page in red and black, title with printer's woodcut device; woodcut ornaments and initials throughout; 103 engraved copperplates in the text; contemporary full parchment, old red leather label on spine (chipped, with some loss); binding soiled, a few ink smears and light spotting in the text, but overall a very good, sound copy. One of the most famous books of emblems of the seventeenth century, designed and illustrated by the Flemish painter and art theorist Otto van Veen (1550-1629). First printed in quarto format in 1607. The Dutch verses are by A. Jansen van Ter Goes. Van Veen had studied for seven years under Federigo Zuccari at Rome. Settling in Antwerp in 1593, he began painting for the churches and public buildings, and for several years, from 1596 to 1600, numbered Rubens among his pupils. His work attracted the admiration and patronage of the Archduke Albert, who succeeded the Prince of Parma in the government of the Low Countries. He published three other emblem books, 'Amorum Emblemata' (1608), 'Amoris Divini Emblemata' (1615) and 'Emblemata Sive Sybola' (1624). Not in Mills College Check List or Riedel-Horatiana.
