Los tres primeros libros de su crónica reflejan el día a día de una ciudad importante de los Países Bajos vista por un observador bien informado. Comenta las decisiones de los gestores municipales para tomar el control de la situación, las ejecuciones judiciales, el flujo del precio de los granos en el mercado, las noticias internacionales. Cuando, en agosto de 1566, empieza un movimiento organizado de destrucción del interior de todas las iglesias, Vaernewijck documenta detalladamente todas las obras de arte que se han perdido y las pocas que han sobrevivido. Se da cuenta de que el rey de España no podrá dejar sin castigo tantos desmanes, como luego se averiguará.
