Muito raro, 1.ª Edição, desta que constitui uma rica fonte bibliografia duma das principais línguas da América do Sul, que engloba várias línguas indígenas, com 302 entradas, dividias em três partes: Parte I: A - Gramáticas; B - Dicionários e Vocabulários; C - Catecismos; D - Obras Várias Sobre a Língua; Parte II; e Parte III: Manuscritos. Importante fonte de consulta e de estudo, em áreas como antropologia, história, linguística, sociologia, entre outras. O tupi-guarani é a mais importante língua indígena da América do Sul e está na essência do português falado no Brasil. O tupi corresponde à língua Tupinambá, que era falada pelas comunidades indígenas do Brasil durante a colonização portuguesa, por sua vez, o Guarani era a língua falada pelos povos encontrados na Argentina, Paraguai, Bolívia, incluindo o Brasil. O tupi-guarani é uma das mais importantes línguas indígenas da América do Sul. O padre jesuíta José de Anchieta pesquisou e produziu uma gramática de tupi-guarani. Muitas palavras sul-americanas têm origem do tupi-guarani. Alfredo do Vale Cabral (Salvador, Bahia, 1851 - Rio de Janeiro, 1894), foi um historiador, folclorico e epigrafo brasileiro. Chegou ao Rio de Janeiro aos 21 anos e ingressou para a Biblioteca Imperial e Pública. Foi considerado ideal para reforma administrativa da Biblioteca por Benjamin Franklin Ramiz Galvão, na altura chefe da Biblioteca, muito provavelmente pelos seus elaborados trabalhos e pela sua obra Dicionário Bibliográfico Baiano, e mais tarde participou na elaboração do Catálokgo da Secção de Manuscritos. Publicou vários trabalhos, entre eles: Guia do Viajante no Rio de Janeiro ; Achegas ao Estudo do Folclore Brasileiro ; De 1808 a 1822 foram publicados os Anais da Imprensa Nacional, registro descritivo das publicações periódicas da Imprensa Régia, colaborou também, em 1882, em exposição de História do Brasil. Esteve envolvido no projecto A Gazeta Literária, revista quinzenal, com Joaquim Teixeira de Melo, com quem trabalhava na Biblioteca Nacional e manteve uma estreira relação de amizade.
