Outlining the social, cultural, and literary context of this counter-current, the author traces its development through the 1st century AD, discussing key figures like Cesius Bassus, and how their work influenced the development of Frontonianism. The book demonstrates that Frontonianism was neither a sudden nor isolated phenomenon, but rather the culmination of a long-standing tradition of literary conservatism. By shedding light on the origins of Frontonianism, this book enhances our understanding of Latin literature and the complex cultural dynamics of the Roman Empire.
